Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it "known that we, ERIC G. SAMPSON and ALFRED L. WELHAM, residents of J amestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Im rovement in File-Holders; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Our invention .relates to file holders and more especially to followers for such holders adapted to be moved back and forth in the holder and retained therein at any desired position.
The object of our invention is to provide a file holder with a follower which, when locked in position, is held securely against movement'and at the same time one which may be readily released so as to move freely in its guides.
To these ends our invention comprises the novel features hereinafter set forth and claimedN In the drawing Figure I is a longitudinal section of a file holder with our invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged front View of a portion of the follower partly in section; Fig. 4 is a like view of follower released; Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail; and Fig. 6 is detail of the spring attaching means; and Fig. 7 is a modified form of our invention.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 2 designates a common form of file holder which is formed of sheet metal comprising the bottom 3, the end 4, the sides 5. and the front 6. Our invention, however, may be applied to other different forms of holders.
The sides 5 are provided at their upper edges with the guideways 7 with the down- .wardly extending groove portions 8. Above the guideways 7 are formed the teeth or indentations 9. These teeth may be formed in 'a bar 9" which is held in the upper portion of the guideway.
The follower 10 consists of a metal plate which is provided with the flange portions 11 around its edge. Secured to the follower late are the brackets 12 and projecting from said brackets .and formed integral therewith are the guide-fingers 13 which enter the guideways 7 and fit down within the grooves 8 of said guideways. These guide-fingers hold the follower in proper position to move easily to and fro in the guldeways without binding.
The locking dogs 14 consist of laterally extending bars WhlCll are supported at their rear. ends in the ides 15, and at their forward ends pass t rou h openings 15 in the slde flanges of the follower plate. The forward ends of the locking dogs are cut off at an oblique angle so as to'readily engage the teeth 9 formed above the guideways. The inner ends of the locking dogs 14.- are provided with the openings 16 which are engaged by the cam fingers 17 of the bolt 18. This bolt 18 passes up through an opening 19 in the top of the follower and a spring 20 surrounds the pin 21 on the bolt, said sprin bein interposed between the bolt 18 and t e let ge or stop 22 on the follower plate. 1
It is apparent that when the bolt 18 is in its normal position, the locking dogs 14 will engage the teeth 9 and the follower will be held securely against movement in the guideways.
When, however, it is desired to 1 ways, the operator simply presses down on the bolt 18 and the cam fingers 17 moving down in the openings 16 in the locking dogs will act to draw sai'd dogs toward each other and release their outer ends from the teeth 9. The follower may then be moved freely to any desired position and by releasing the bolt 18 the spring 20 will raise said bolt and the cam fingers 17 force the locking dogs again into engagement with the teeth 9. In this manner, we provide a very simple and effective means for securing the follower in position and readily releasing the same, the follower being held accurately in alinement so that it cannot become stalled or jammed in such a Way as to prevent its free and easy movement when released.
In Fig. 7 we have illustrated amodified form of our invention in which the locking dogs 23 are pivoted to the bell-cranks 24, said bell-cranks being pivoted in turn to the follower plate. The bell-cranks are pivoted to each other and at this pivotal pointthe bolt 26 is attached, said bolt extending up through an opening in the toppf the follower and the spring being interposed between said bolt and the'ledge or stop 29. By forcing down the bolt it is apparent that the action of the bell-cranks will be to draw the locking vdogs toward each other and release them and when the bolt isfree from pressure the spring will throw the locking dogs back into locking position.
What we claim is: I
1. In a file holder, the combination of a follower, oppositely arranged guideways extending longitudinally of said holder, locking dogs carried by said follower adapted to engage the opposite sides of said holder, and a spring actuated bolt having cam diverging fingers engaging openings in said locking ogs.
2. In a file holder, the combination of a follower, oppositely arranged guideways extending longitudinally of said holder, looking dogs comprising bars extending longitudinally of said follower and movably supported thereby, said dogs adapted to engage opposite sides of said holder, a spring actuated bolt, and connections between said bolt and said bars for moving the same simultaneously.
3. In a file holder, the combination of a follower, oppositely arranged guideways extending longitudinally of said holder, said guideways having downwardly extending grooves, guide-fingers on said follower engaging said guideways and having downwardly projecting ends engaging the grooves therein, spring actuated locking dogs adapted to engage opposite faces of the holder, andmeans for operating said dogs simultaneously.
