ADJUSTABLE GUN-s'roCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 24:, 1910.
Application filed November 1, 1909. Serial No. 525,651.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SURVILAN POWERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Adjustable Gun-Stocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide an adjustable gun stock that will enable the user to shift the barrel or barrels of a rifle or shot gun either inward or outward as may be required inthe horizontal plane.
It is of course well understood that in order to accomplish accurate firing with either a rifle or shot gun, the butt of the stock should be firmly braced against the shoulder just within the shoulder joint and that the eye of the shooter must be placed in alinement with the sights, which necessitates bending the head more or less sidewise.
Heretofore, so far as I am aware, no means has been provided for adjusting the stock to the figure of the shooter so that the butt of the stock might be seated firmly against the shoulder and at the same time the barrel and sights might be shifted to convenient position for aiming without bending the head into an awkward and uncomfortable position.
Ordinarily it will be found to add greatly to the ease and convenience of shooting, especially in ver accurate shooting, to shift the barrel and sights inward away from the shoulder, but my novel adjustable stock provides equally well for wide or narrow shoulders, for right and left handed shooters and for any adjustment either inward or outward within reasonable limits that may be required in order to seat the butt ofthe stock firmly against the shoulder and to place the barrel and sights in most convenient position for accurate aiming.
In order to accomplish the desired result I have devised a two-member gun stock so constructed that the barrel may be adjusted inward or outward from the shoulder to adapt the n to different figures and to right and left handed shooters.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an elevation of a gun provided with my novel adjustable stock; Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are detail plan views illustrating different adjustments of the butt relatively to the fixed member of the stock; Fig. 5 a side elevation of the connections detached; Fig. 6 a plan view of the connections detached; and Fig. 7 is a detail section on the line 7-7 in Fig. 5 looking in the direction 'of the arrow.
10 denotes the barrel of a gun or rifle, 11 the front sight, and 12 the rear sight.
My invention consists in making the stock to comprise two members and in providing connections for adjustably securing said members together. 18 denotes the fixed member of the stock which is secured to the barrel in the ordinary or in any preferred manner and 14 the adjustable base or butt member of the stock. Each member is provided with a connection, the two connections being so constructed as to permit lateral movement of the butt. In the pres ent instance I have shown the connection upon the butt member as consisting of metallic side straps 15 which are recessed into the opposite sides of the butt and--- secured thereto in any suitable manner as by screws or bolts 16 and which is provided with a head plate 17 extending above and below the straps. The connection upon the fixed "member of the stock consists of side straps 18 secured to the member as before, and a head 19 which is provided with transverse grooves 20 in which the upper and lower edges of the head plate slide and with flanges 21 which overlie the upper and lower edges of the head plate and lie between the head plate and the forward end of the butt in such a manner as not to mar the symmetry of the stock. In order to prevent the detachment of the butt from the fixed member of the stock I provide suitable stops to limit the movement of the butt in each direction. In the resent instance I have shown head plate 1 as provided with slots 22 extending inward from opposite sides which are engaged by pins 23 upon head 19.
It will be understood from Fig. 7 that the buttmay be moved in either direction relatively to the fixed member of the stock until the movement is stopped by the engagement of one of the pins with the corresponding slot in the head plate. One or both of the pins are screw pins and one of them of course is not turned in until after the head plate and head have been placed in engagement, As a means of locking the butt at any desired adjustment relatively to the fixed member of the stock and the barrel, I have provided a set screw 24: in head 19 which engages the head plate on the other member of the stock to lock the members in position after adjustment.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. An adjustable gun stock comprising a member adapted to be fixed relatively to a barrel and having a head provided With transverse grooves, a butt member having a head plate slidingly mounted in said grooves, said plate having a slot leading in from each edge, stop pins carried by said head and coinciding With said slots to limit the relative adjustment of said members, and means for locking said head plate in any adjusted position.
2. A two-part gun stock comprising a member adapted to be fixed relatively to a barrel and having a head provided With transverse grooves and side strips for attachment to the member, a butt member having a head plate adapted to engage the grooves and side strips for attachment to the member and means for locking the butt member at any desired adjustment relatively to the fixed member.
3. A two-part gun stock comprising a member adapted to be fixed relatively to a barrel and having a head provided With transverse grooves, side strips adapted for attachment to the member and stop pins, a butt member having a head plate adapted to engage the grooves, side strips for attachment to the member and pins engaging the slots for the purpose set forth, and means for locking the butt member at any desired adjustment relatively to the fixed member.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
