In the casing 2 of the padlock, arranged in a preferably oval case 1 are arranged movable locking plates 3 shown in Fig. 7 lo cated one above another and separated from one another by fixed plates 4. The plates 3 are arranged on the plates 4 in such manner that the shoulders 5 of the locking plates engage with projections 6 on the plates 4 (Fig. 2) in the manner hereinafter described. The plates 4 are provided with circular apertures 8 for guiding the two ends of the shackle 7. Each plate 3 has a longitudinal slot 9 which at the places where the shackle 7 passes through has segmental parts 10 cut out corresponding to the size of the shackle. The longitudinal slots 9 are of uniform length in the various plates but in each plate are not symmetrical about the central line A-B (Fig. 7) but are transposed or staggered either to the right or to the left of the same. If, therefore, the various plates 3 are arranged one above another the slots 10 will not be in register (Fig. 1) In order to bring the slots 10 into register the plates 3 must be shifted in horizontal planes so that the transversemedian line of the plate does not coincide with the transverse median line of the slot. On the shackle 7 which is of the same diameter as the slot 10 notches 11 are provided on both sides (Figs. 4 and 5) so that the plates or the inner edges of the slots 9 engage the notches 11 and prevent the withdrawal of the shackle. lVhen the plates 3 are in a position in which the perforations 10 and 8 are in register the shackle 7 can be its free end a lug 19.

Each of the locking plates is' provided with spiral springs 16 bearing at one end on the projections 6 on the plates 4 and at the other end on the shoulders 15 or the plates 3. If the key is withdrawn the springs 16 shift the plates 3 so far that the shoulders 5 coincide with the projections on the plates 4. The free movement of the plates under the action of the spiral spring 16 is not prevented by the shackle l7' as the same is provided with notches 11. The withdrawal of the shackle is however prevented by the inner edges 17 of the slots 9 which as mentioned engage the notches in the shackle.

Having described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is l. In a safety lock the combination with a casing of a shackle attached to said casing said shackle being formed with notches, fixed plates secured in the interior of said casing, movable plates interposed between said fixed plates, said xed plates being `-rmed with orifices and said movable plates having orifices out of line with each other and connected by slots, said orifices serving to receive said shackle, said movable plates adapted to be moved longitudinally in one direction through varying distances under the action of a key, and a spring tending to move the movable plates in the opposite direct-ion.
2. In a safety lock the combination of a casing, of fixed plates mounted in said cas ing and formed with oriiices, movable plates interposed between said fixed plates and formed with orifices out of line with each other and connected by slots, a tubular shackle one shank of which is shorter than the other, a helical spring mounted in the longer limb of the shackle and interposed between the same and the casing, and a blade spring fitted below the plates and provided with a lug adapted to be engagedby a lug on the key, as and for the purpose set forth.
