Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN TREMPER, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
GOVERNOR.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 9,336, dated October 12, 1852.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN TREMPER, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie 'and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Governors of Valves for Steam-Engines and for other Purposes, of which the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and references, is suiiciently clear and comprehensive to enable others of competent skill to make and use my invention.
The nature of my improvement consists in the use of cords, chains, rods, or their equivalent, when wound upon a spindle, or otherwise, as hereinafter described, and com-A bined with, or attached to weights or fans for the purpose of regulating the motion of steam engines-or for regulating the supply of fluids, &c.
Figure 1 is a vertical elevation of a governor with a valve box and valve-below the beam A. Fig. 2, is a plan of the clasp O, which surrounds the spindle E and works the valve by the connecting rod C. Fig. 3 is a top view of a valve box, &c., to which this governor may be applied.

E, is a. spindle having a pulley F, upon it, driven bythe engine. Upon this spindle being turned it winds up the cord G, which passes through the top of the spindle. Each end of this cord is attached to the centers of either two opposite disks or fan wheelssJ, and the fore arms I, placed at right angles to each other, from these four disks or fan wheels making them secure to the hub H, the hub and its attachments are raised as the cord winds upon the spindle. This hub H slides upy and down easily upon the spindle E. The cord is either wound up or rewound whenever the spindle moves at a different velocity from that of t-he metallic disks or fan wheels J. If the spindle moves at an increased motion the disks or fan wheels will also revolve at an increased rate but not as rapidly as the spindle they being retarded by the resistance of the atmosphere and their own weight. This difference in motion winds up the cord upon the spindle until it is wound as far as it can be wound, or until the valve is partly closed and the motion of the engine reduced to its required speed. Both the spindle` and disks J revolve at the same ratio when the engine is working at a regular speed. If the motion of the spindle decreases-the force or moment-um that t-he disks J, have already received carry them more rapidly than the spindle and thus unwinds the cord, and lets the metallic disks t and their attachments fall by their own weight.
These disks J, may be of any 'shape desired as cylindrical, globular or otherwise and may be wound by any suitable material-or the spindle may be dispensed with and the cords or other elastic or flexible substances may be twisted around each other. This arrangement produces an immediate change in the position of the valve by the slightest variation in the speed of the engine in the following manner: A circular groove is eut in the lower part of the hub H, and a clasp O, made to fit this groove. The hub turns in the clasp and the clasp only rises and falls with the hub, but does not turn with it. This clasp is made in two parts cut in the manner shown in drawings Figs. l and 2 so that when the two parts are are put together properly, they will be kept firmly together by a screw t passing through bot-h parts, cut upon the upper end of the connecting rod C. This connecting rod O works the valve by the lever K, which turns the valve shaft or stem L.V The position of this lever upon the shaft being adjustable, and made fast by the screw c.
The valve box may be constructed in the form shown in drawings Figs. l, 3, 4, 5, and 6 or in any other form substantially the same. I also contemplate operating the governor valve of steam and other engines by the twisting and untwisting of a flexible cord or chain or its equivalent attached to revolving retarders and to the driving pulley placed above the same detached from the spindle; or windin it on the sides of a shaft somewhat coni-cal 1n form, whose sides are curves of a semicycloidal form-the larger diameter of the winding portion being downward.
Having thus described my invention and improvement in governors what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. The combination of the winding cords or chains G-rctard'ers or disks J-hub H and spindle E arranged and operating in the manner and for the purpose substantially as herein set forth.
2.`I also claim operating the governor valve of steam and other engines by the twisting and untwisting of a flexible cord or chain or equivalent thereto attached to revolving retarclers and to the driving pulley placed above the same and detched from the spindle.
