GUARD FOR TROWELS.
Specification oi Letters Patent.
Patented .Tune 29, 1909.
Application led December 30, 1908. Serial No. l70,057.
To all whom it may concern:
'Be it known that l, CLAUDE R. Hof/JOB, a citizen ofthe United States7 residing at 'Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful lmprovenients in Guards for Trowels, of which the lfollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to trowels, and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective guard positioned upon the shank of a trowel directly between the handle and the blade of the trowel whereby the mortar received upon the blade of the trowel is prevented from contacting with the hand of the mason using the trowel.
"d" ith theI above, and other objects in View which will appear as the description progresses the invention resides in the novel construction of guards for trowels hereinafter fully described and claimed.
ln the drawing, Figure 1. is a perspective view of an ordinary trowel provided wi'th the improved guard. Fig. 2 is a transverse scctional view through the shank of the trowel and looking toward the guard. Fig. S is a vertical sectional View upon the line 313 of Fig. 2.
ln the accompanying drawing the .numeral l designates a trowel of the ordinary construction., and comprising a blade 2, shank 3 and handle 4a. rl`he handle 4L is provided with the usual ferrule 5 whereby it is c'll'ectively retained upon the oilset sha-nk 3 of tho trowel.
The numeral 4 designates the improved finger guard. a single strip of flat material, preferably steel or iron and is provided with a suitable opening 5 of a size corresponding with that of the offset portion of the shank 3, and the guard et is also provided with a rearwardly extending ferrule 6 which is of a size adapted to ,lit snugly over the ferrule 5 of thehandlo lll. rlhc top portion of the flattened guard is pro vided with a central depression 7 which is adapted for the reception of the thumb or fore finger of the artisan manipulating the trowel. This cut away portion or depression 7 is of an especial usefulness when the rThis guard #l is constructed of I l l l l l l l l trowel is being employed for pointing up tho mortar joints between stones or bricks of buildings.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be noted that l have provided an cxtremely simple and ell'ective mortar guard for trowels, one which may be easily and quickly positioned upon the ferrule of the handle of any ordinary trowel by simply removing the handle from the shank of the trowel and inserting the thimble of the guard upon the trowel7 one which effectively prevents the mortar carried by the trowel from contacting the hand ol' the artisan, and one which has its upper edge provided with a depression adapted for the reception of the thumb or fore linger of the artisan so that the mechanic may retain a Ii rm grip upon the trowel while pointing up the joints of mortar between the bricks or stones of a building.
l'laving thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. rlhe combination with a trowel comprising a blade having an offset shank and a handle provided with a fcrrule connected with the shank, of a guard comprising a. flattened member having a thimble adapted to engage the fcrrulc of the handle and an opening communicating with thc interior of the thimblc adapted to engage the shank of the trowel.
2. The combination with a trowel comprisin a blade, an offset shank, and a handle provided with a fcrrulc connecting the offset shank, of a flattened guard provided with an ori'ici` and a thilnblc7 the thimble engaging the ferrule of the handle and the opening adapted for the reception of the shank of the trowel, and said guard having one of its edges `provided with a centrally arranged depression, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
:ln testimony whereof l allix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CLAUDE R.. HOZIO'R.
