Kiew, in the Empire of Russia, have 1nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Hermetically Sealing Receptacles from Which Air or Gas Has Been Exhausted, of which the following is a specification. 7
This invention relates to a method of hermetically sealing receptacles from which air or gas has been exhausted, and more particularly receptacles having a metallic exhausttube by which they are connected with the suction-pump. It has been considerably more difficult to hermetically seal metallic exhaust-tubes than to seal those made of glass, and in most cases it is necessary to employ faucet-like closures, which are not entirely reliable and increase the expense.
The object of this invention is to provide a method whereby a reliable hermetic sealing of metallic exhaust pipes or tubes may be effected in a simple manner without employing such faucet -like closures. The novel features of this method will appear from the following description and claims.-
The accompanying drawing illustrates one example of how the method may be carried into efiect.
In the drawing 1 is a receptacle of metal or other material provided with a metallic exhaust-tube 2-by which it is connected with the suction-pump not shown) by means of which the air or gas is exhausted from the receptacle. 7V V I Y The improved method consists in forming 2, for example at pointfi, a bend or curve, and in placing within the tube at said bend granular, easily fusible material 4t of any suitable kind, such as tin or lead. Such material is so placed in the exhausttube that there is no difficulty in withdraw: ing the air or gas from the receptacle 1 which is to be sealed. When the air or gas has been exhausted from the receptacle the bend 3 in the tube and the granular material in the bend are heated by a flame so that said material, which is melted at a relatively low temperature, closes the tube and when cold completely seals the latter. In this manner the sealing of the metallic exhaust-tube is reliably effected in a simple manner merely by the use of granular, fusible material and a heating flame.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The method of hermetically sealing a receptacle having an exhaust-tube, which consists in placing in such tube granular sealing material, exhausting the receptacle .by means of the tube through the sealing material, and melting and solidifying the granular material while the receptacle is exhausted.
2. The method of hermetically sealing a receptacle having an exhaust-tube, which consists in forming a bend in the exhausttube, placing sealing material in such bend, exhausting the receptacle by means of the tube-through the sealing material, and then melting and solidifying the sealing material. 3'. The method of hermetically sealing a receptacle having a bent exhaust-tube, which consists in placing granular sealing material in the bend of the tube, exhausting the recepta'cle by sucking out the air and gas through such tube and the sealing material therein, then heating the tube to melt the sealing material, and finally ermitting the cooling and solidifying of suc material, the heating and cooling taking place while the vacuum is maintained in the tube.
