To all whom it may concern: i
Be it 'known that I, REINHOLD ,Knorr- Mine, of Milwaulee, Wisconsin, have invented an Attachment Means for Binder-Posts, of which the following is a specification.
In my copending United States patent application N o. 308,168, i'lled March 26I 1906, I have shown an improved means for attaching tubular osts to binder-backs, the
same consisting o a pair of plates or dislf-V shaped elements screwed upon the end of the ost-section on opposite sides of a lthin ben able sheet-metal base or body which they clamp between them,-a great advance over the old method of screwing the post directly into a rigid bach which Was current rior to my advent in the field, since the atter construction is subject to serious disadvantages, among others those ot` easily brealring off at the base and of becoming loose and coming out accidentally, which Vis due to the necessary fineness ofthe threads, the shortness of the threaded ortion, and the constant side-strains upon t ie post. i
In my copending application No. 409,273, led Jan. 4, 1908, I have disclosed and claimed a still further and great improvement upon the screwed clamping-plates or nuts of my lirst said application, since therein I have shown ameans of dispensing with the threads entirely and thus securing Vnot onlya much stronger and more rigid but also a cheaper means of attachment.
My present application comprises a still further improvement of the attachmentmeans of my two former applications, since I have succeeded in making the post-section with the attachment-means thereon removable from the binder-back; and by my iinroved construction I in addition maire the device fully as cheap if not cheaper than before, and also fully as strong.
Briefly, in my present invention. I unite the two clamping-plates of my aforenamedV application into a single element or member which is adapted to slide in edgewise bendable sheet-metal strip which forms the body or base of the binder-back.
The nature of my invention will be bestV and more precisely understood by a consideration of the following description of the most improved form thereof, talren in connection with the accompanying drawings illustrative ofthe same. f

Referrin iirst to Figs. 1 to 10 inclusive, the binderack is designated a and the postsection t. Said binder-back is, in the most improved form of my invention, made of bendable sheet metal; although it is not confined thereto, as it could be constructed on the same principle with rigid or cast metal or other material.

Said attachment -piece will ordinari y be punched into the outline shown from a strip of sheet metal, and will subsequently have two saw-cuts c on opposite sides thereof and in the plane of the flat surfaces, said saw-cuts extending slightlywithin the margin of the circular central body c2, so as to form flats c3 on opposite sides 5 whereby said saw-cuts leave a pairofirojecting-flanges c4 on opposite sides of sai saw-cuts. The saw-cuts are of the exact thickness of the base a, or as closely as possible so, whereby the latter is received and fitsr closely between them as shown in Fig. 2. made el' the same diameter as the internal bore ot the post l); and the end ot the latter is cut aWay on opposite sides to torni llats t', leaving abutment shoulders b2 at the bottom, and forming thus a pair ot upstanding tabs b3 which lit neatly between the two projecting ends et the tlanges c4 ot the attacln nient-piece, When the central body c:I et the latter is inserted between them into the bore of the post; and When the attachment-piece is in place on thepost, the projecting ends ot the tabs b3 are tiattened or clenched down over the upper surl'ace thereof as clearly shown in Figs. l to i inclusive.
The base a has a buttonhole-slot as shown in Fig. 7, the same comprising a circular hole a ot the same diameter oi' the post and provided With a side-outlet a2 the Width ot which is the same as that across the flats b and c3 ot the post and attachment-piece; whereby the latter, when mounted together as in Fig. 3, Will slide through the opening, in the position of Fig. 6, and when it reaches the circular portion can be rotated therein into position at right angles to its entering position, as shown in Fig. 5, in Which latter position it cannot be removed.
l/Vhere the post is to be frequently removed this Will complete the operation of inserting it in place, and no further means tor holding it there is necessar since there is no torce tending to rotate it and sufficient liriction to keep it from rotating under ordinary circumstances. Side-strains upon the pest Will simply cause a bending ot the baci; e adjacent to the base of the post, and l have found by experience that this does not loosen the post but actually tightens the saine, because the bending of the edges ot the hole a disturbs the regularity of the surface ot the base and tends to make it bind tighter between the tlanges c4.
It it be desired to nonremovably secure the post to the base, it is simply necessary to hammer the 'llanrfes c4 together so as to produce a riveting effect which eflectively prevents any rotative movement. However, as such riveting is very inconvenient when it is desired to get the post loose again, l prefer to use some such means as shown in Figs. 'i 'and 4 to prevent the post from rotating until it is desired to remove it. in thesel figures the binder-back is shown complete, there being pasteboard pads or cushions d and c secured to opposite sides of the base e, the pad d being of the same thickness as the ilanges c4 and the pad e being somewhat thicker so that its outer surface is tlush with the tops of the tabs b3; and each pad has a recess, et, e', out therein to receive these elements. Haring thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by lietters Patent is:
l. Means for attaching a binder-post to its support comprising a base having a circulllb lar opening with a side-outlet narrower than the opening to receive the post and means on the end of said post for engaging and interlocking. with the base, said means passing through said side-outlet and ladapted to rotate in said hole. 2. Means for attaching a binder-post to its support comprising a base having a circular opening with a side-outlet narrower than the opening to receive the post and means on the end of said post for engaging said opening provided with a circular surface `of the 'same diameter as said opening, flats on-opposite sides thereof the width across which is the same as that ofsaid side-outlet, and surfaces extending over the edges of said opening on both sides of said base.
3. Means for attaching a binder-post to its support comprising a base-plate having a circular hole therein and a side-outlet from said hole to one edge of the plate,said sideoutlet being of narrower width than the diameter of said hole, a post-section, and an attachment-piece on the end of said postsection adapted to pass into said hole through said side-outlet and interlocking with the edges of said hole.
4. In combination with a laminar base having a buttonhole-slot therein, a removable post for binder-backs comprising a tubular cylindrical member having means for removably engaging said button-holeslot on the edges thereof and also on-the opposite sides of said base. t
5. ln combination with a laminar base having abuttonhole-slot therein, a removable post for binder-backs comprising aV cylindrical post section having laminar flanges on the ends thereof separated by a distance substantially equal to the thickness of said base and adapted to extend over the edges of said slot; the .body of said post-secton being adapted to enter and rotate in said s ot.
6. A removable post vfor binder-backs comprising a tubular post-section having flats cut on the sides thereof forming upstanding tabs between them, and an attachment-piece having a central body fitting in the bore of said post and having a pair of e projecting flanges extending outwardly between said tabs; the projecting ends of said tabs being engaged with said attachmentpiece. A removable post for binder-backs comprising a tubular post-section having flats cut on the sides thereof forming upstanding tabs between them, and an attachment-piece having a central body fitting in the bore of said post and having a pair of projecting flangesY extending outwardly between said tabs; the projecting ends of said tabs being bent and clenched down over the center of said attachment-piece.
8. A removable post-section for binders comprising a tubular post-section having a pair of oppositely disposed iiats cut on one end thereofleaving apair of oppositely disposed tabs between said flats and an attachment-piece having a central body portion iitting'the boreof said post and lying between said tabs and two pairs of iianges extending outwardly from said body-portion between said tabs the projecting ends of said tabs being clenched down over said central body-portion.
9. A removable post-section for binders comprising a tubular post-section having a pair of oppositely disposed flats cut on one end thereof leaving a pair of oppositely disposed tabs between said flats; and an attachment-piece having a central body portion fitting the bore of said post and lying between said tabs and two pairs of i'ianges extending outwardly from said body-portion between said tabs, the projecting ends of said tabs being clenched down over said central body-portion in combination with a laminar base having a circular hole therein which has the same diameter as said post-section and a side-outlet of the same width as the distance across said flats.
10. Means for the attachment of posts to binder-backs comprising a laminar base having a circular hole therein connected with one edge of the base by a side-outlet of narrower width, a tubular post-section of the same diameter as said hole, projecting flanges extending outward from the post-section on opposite faces of said base, and filling-pads secured to said base on opposite sides thereof and having recesses which receive said iianges.
11. Means for the attachment of posts to binder-backs comprising a laminar base having a circular hole therein connected with one edge of the' base by a side-outlet of narrower ameter as ,said hole, projecting iianges extending outward from the post-section on opposite faces of said base, and lling-pads 'width, a tubular post-section of the same disecured to said base on opposite sides thereof andl having recesses which receive said iianges, and a iiexible covering sheet secured over said pads and recesses.
12. Means for the attachment of posts to binder-backs comprising a laminar base having a circular hole therein connected with one edge of the base by a side-outlet of narrower width, a tubular post-section of the same diameter as said hole, projecting non-circular flangesextending outwardly upon said post on opposite faces of said base, said iianges being separated by intervals of the same thickness as said base and the same width apart as the sides of said side-outlet whereby said postend is adapted to pass into said hole through said side-outlet and when rotated is non-removable through said side-outlet, a filling pad mounted on one side of said base and having a recess therein which receives said flanges, and a projecting tab or like element on said filling-pad projecting into said recess and engaging said iang'es to prevent the post from rotating.
13. A removable post-section for binders comprising a tubular post-section having a pair of oppositely disposed flats cut on the end thereof leaving a pair of oppositely disposed tabs between said lats 5 and an attachment-piece having a central body portion fitting the bore of said post and lying between said tabs and two pairs of lianges extending outwardly from said body-portion between saidtabs, the projecting ends of said tabs being clenched down over said central body-portion; in combination with a laminar base having a circular hole therein which has the saine diameter as said post-section and a side-outlet of the saine width as the distance f on one of said ii lingieces extending into K the recess therein an@ between projecting elements on said flanges whereby it engages the attachment-piece and prevents it from rotating.
