ROTARY PUMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 10, 1907.
Patented April 20, 1909.
Serial NO. 405,930.
To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, MoRrnN MoRrENsEN,
a subject of Norway, residing at Hyde Park,
in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Pumps, of which the following is a specification, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawm s.
My invention relates to improvements in rotary pumps; and an object of my invention is to provide a rotary pump which will be simple in construction, comparatively cheap in manufacture and most eflicient in use.
In the drawings illustrating the principle of my invention and the best mode now known to me of applying that principle, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my new ump Fig. 2 is a central vertical section t ereof; Fig. 3 is a view of the interior of the ump, the face-plate being shown removed; ig. 4 shows the inner face of the face-plate Fig. 5 is a view looking in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a section on the line AA of Fig. 1; Fig. 7 is a detail in pers ective of the drum-carrier; Fig. 8 is a detai showing the slidable abutment; Fig. 9 is a detail showing the rear face of the drum; Fig. 10 is a section on the line BB of Fig. 3; Fig. 11 is a detail showing the inlet and outlet ports; apd Fig. 12 is a detail showing the drum in p an.
The casing a is cylindrical in shape and is provided with bracket-lugs b by which the casing may be attached to any suitable suport. To the casing a is fastened by screwolts c the face-plate d. The inner face of the latter is formed with a ring-shaped or cylindrical wall 6 which is concentric with the face-plate and from which extends a radial partition wallf formed with a groove 9 in its inner radial edge. The face-plate d is further formed with a circular groove h in which is placed packing i that serves to seal the joint between the face-plate and the casing. In the latter is journaled a shaft 7' upon the outer end of which is mounted a driving wheel 7c and upon the inner end of which is mounted a drum-carrier m consisting of a disk n from which projects inwardly the stud around which is coiled a spring wire p one end of which is held fast in the notch or recess g in the edge of the disk and the other end of which presses outwardly the drum-plate 1" which is pivoted at s on the disk at and which is formed with a pivot-stud t. The drum-plate r is further formed with a notch or recess 11, adapted to receive a stoplug e which projects from the disk n and limits the inward movement of the drumplate.
Upon the pivot-stud t is mounted the hollow drum w, the former passing through a central hole at in the latter; and by reference to the drawings, it will be seen that the drum w is mounted eccentrically with respect to the shaft 9' which drives it through the drumcarrier m. Near its peripheral edge the hollow drum w is formed with a recess y in the bottom of which is formed a hole 3. The recess is shaped to receive the head 2 of the slidable abutment 2, while the hole 8 in its bottom is adapted to receive the stud 4 which projects from the head 2, whereby the hollow drum w is pivotally connected to the inner end of the slidable abutment 2. The latter works back and forth in a stufling-boX 6, as the drum w moves in the casing; and it is guided by the engagement of its rib in the groove 9 in the radial partition wall f. The hollow drum 'w is formed with an opening 7 in its cylindrical wall through which opening passes the radial partition wall f just referred to, whereby the opening 7 is divided into an inlet opening 8 and an outlet opening 9. The casing a is formed with an inlet port and an outlet port 11; and the former communicates with the intake pipe 12, while the latter communicates with the discharge pipe 13. The outer end of the radial partition wall extends to and abuts against the part 14 of the casing a which separates the ports 10 and 11.
From the foregoing description and an inspection of the drawings, it will be noted that the hollow drum to is held firmly but with a yielding pressure against the inner cylindrical wall of the chamber 15. Hence, the tendency will be to cause the drum and the wall of the chamber to wear to a true fit, if they are not exactly so at the start; and, further, allowance is made by the yielding nature of the mounting for the passage of any sand or grit which enters between the drum and the opposed wall against which it rubs. As the driving shaft 7' turns, the hollow drum w is carried back and forth along the radial partition wall f and also around the chamber 15, rubbing against the wall thereof. Water will be admitted to the chamber 15 between the wall of the latter and the wall of the drum; and water will also be admitted to the inside of the drum w in the space between its wall and the wall f. As the drum w moves around in the chamber 15, it will force the water out through the opening 9, port 1.1 and discharge pipe 18.
I claim:
In a rotary pump of the character described, the combination with a casing formed with a recess and with inlet and outlet ports; a drivingshait journaled in said casing; a disk mounted on the inner end of said shaft and in said recess; a spring-pressed drumplate pivotally mounted on said disk; a hollow cylindrical drum pivotally mounted on said drum-plate and formed with an opening which communicates with said ports; a slidable abutment pivotally connected to said drum and formed with a guide-rib; and a face-plate which is fastened to said casing and is formed with an inwardly-extending cylindrical flange and with a partition Wall grooved to receive said guide-rib, said flange lying Within said hollow drum.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts this third day of December, 1907, in the presence of the two undersigned witnesses.
MORTEN MORTENSEN.
