COMBINATION WRENGH ANU THREAD-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
latented March 2, 190$.
Application filed June 11, 1908. Serial No. 437,814.
. To'all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Nrcnoms STIREN, a citizen of" the United States, residing at Litch'lield, in the county of Meeker and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful lm movements in a Qombination d/Vrench andT read-Cutter, of which thciollowing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.-
h'iy invention relates to improvements'in wrenches and particularly to improvements in combination-wrenches adapted to be used for a -kit f purposes.
An object of my invention is to provide a combination-tool o l the class described which will be simple in' construction, comparatively cheap in manufacture and most cilicient in operation and which will have a wide field of usefulness.
In the drawings illustrating the principle of my invention and the best mode now known to me of applying that principle,
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, showing my new wrench Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the opposite side from that shown in Fig. 1, one of the wrench members being shown moved out from the end of the shank; Fig. 3 shows the wrench members removed and the screwdriver in place; Fig. 4 shows one ofthe wrench members adjusted to allow the thread-cutting dies to be moved apart; Fig. 5 shows the shank member fitted with'a reamer .Fig. 6 is a detail of the screwdriver; Fig. 7'is a detail of the reamer; Fig.8 is a detail of a tap which may be used with my new combination tool; and Fig. 9 is a detail of a thread-cutting die.
The body portion or shank 'a. is provided at its ends with threaded holes b, c. In the hole 1), screws the threaded shank I] oi" the Wrench-head 6 formed with jaws f and g. The wrench-head e is also formed with a hammer-head it. The hole c is threaded and communicates with a recess i in which is slidably fitted the two-part thread-cutting die j shown in detail in Fig. 9. The bottom wall of the recess i is formed with a hole It (Figs. 2 and 3), through which may be passed the rod or pipe upon which is to be cut the threads by the die j. The threaded shank m screws into the hole 0; and the free end of this shank m projrcts into the recess 'i and is adapted to press against one side of the thread cutting die j and thereby to clamp i the latter firmly in place upon the pipe or rod to. be threaded. By turning the wrench head 41,,as is shown in Fig. 4, the parts of the die j may be made free to be adjusted relatively to each other. i
' 1n the middle of the shank a is formed a hole 0 in which may be fitted the squared head ol' a reamer p or a tap g. The wrenchhead c may be removed and the threaded shank of a screwdriver r may be fitted in the threaded hole 6. It will be obvious that the wrench head 2 may be screwed into the hole 0 and the wrench head a into the hole b,'so that these wrench heads are interchangeable so far as position is concerned. Further, by turning either wrench head upon its threaded postas an axis, the jaws f, g will be moved towards or away l'rom'the shank member to, thereby varying the leverage of the jaws. Again, by turning either wrench head upon its threaded posts at, m, as an axis, the shoulder 8 will be moved away from. the opposed end of the shank member, leaving a space in which may be engaged a nut t (Fig. 2).
I claim:
A combination tool of the character .described, consisting of a shank member formed with a recess, the walls of which hold a thread-cutting device, and formed also with a threaded hole which communicates with said recess and in which is inserted a threaded post, the inner end of which projects into said recess and bears against said device to clamp the same in place and which carries a wrei'ich-head formed with a pair of jaws.
ln witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand at said Litchficld this 6th day of June, A. 1)., 1908, in the presence of the two undersigned witnesses.
NICHOLAS STIREN.
Witnesses: Y i
E. P. PETERsoN, HARRY EKBLAD.
