ALBERT KREHLIK, OF NEWBURGH CITY, OHIO.
CARPENTERS GAGE AND SCRIBER.
specification `of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 22, 1908.
Application filed June 1s, 1908, serial No. 438,329.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT KREHLIK, a citizen of the United States, residing at N ewburglr City, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpenters Gages and Scribers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in carpenters gages and scribers, the invention being adapted for use either as an ordinary carpenters gage or as a scriber, the primary object being to provide a generally-improved device of this class which will be exceedingly simple Yin construction, cheap of manufacture, and eflicient in use.
Vllith these ends in view,'the invention consists-in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1, is a side eleva tion of the improved tool. Fig. 2, a sectional view, the scale-bar being removed from the gage-stock and an ordinary lead pencil substituted, thus adapting the same for use as a scriber. Fig. 3, a view of the front or face portion of the improved gagestock. Fig. 4, a top plan view of the same. Fig. 5, a detailed perspective View of the improved pivotally and adjustablyemounted scriber member detached.
Similar numerals of reference designate like parts throughout all the figures of the drawings.
The gage-stock comprises longitudinal-extending base-members or walls l, connected by means of an intermediate head-block or casin'gi. The base-members or walls 1, are provided at each end with heads 3, and 1, terminating in guideflugs 5, provided with bearing-openings 6, adapted to receive and carry the graduated scale-bar 7. The scale bar is provided at one endwith` a rotatable marker-disk 8, said marker-disk being carried upon a bearing-screw 9, threaded into the end of Ithe scale-bar 7. The head 3, forms the face or guard-head of the gage-stock, and the scale bar 7, is adiustably-mounted and/ carried within the bearing-openings 6, of the guide-lugs 5, by means of a pair ofspring-resisted clutch members 10, pivotallymounted and interposed attheir lower or baseends between the base-members or walls 1, by means of bearing bars or pins 11, which take through bearing-openings in bearing-lugs 12, of the clutch members.
The clutch-members 10, are provided with friction-clutch-openings 13, registering and in alinement with the bearing openings 6, of the guide-lugs, and adapted to receive and ad j ustably contain the graduated scalebar 7, carried within said openings 6, of the guide-lugs 5. clutch-members 10, are arranged on each side of the head block or casing 2, and project beyond the same, said clutch-members being held in their engaging position with the scale-bar 7, by means of a coil-spring 14, surrounding said scale-bar and interposed between said cl utchmembers, said coil-spring being also housed within the head-block or casing 2.
As a means for adapting the improved tool for use as a scriber, the head 4, is provided with an arm 15, terminating in a bearing-lug carrying a pivotally and adjustably mounted scriber member 17. The seriber member 17, comprises a single blank of metal longitudinally bent upon itself forming the base wings or bearing-lugs 17a. The scriber member 17, is adjustably-secured to the bearinglug 16, by having its bearing-lugs 17", secured thereto by means of a screw 18, the shank of which passes through the openings ofthe bearing- lugs 16 and 17, said screw 18, being drawn up or tightened by means of a thumb-,nut 19. The shank of the screw 1S, is preferably provided near the head of the screw with a short rib which is adapted to iit within a, recess 20, (see Fig. 5) extending from the bearing-opening of one of the bearing-lugs 17a.
The scale-bar is removed by drawing the free or handle ends ofthe clutch-members 10, towards each other and into engagementwith' the intermediate head-bloek or easing 2, said casing 2, acting as a stop for maintaining the clutch-members 10, in a substantially arallel position with each other in their re eased position while the seale-bar is being ren'ioved. After the scale-bar has been removed a pencil 2] may be inserted, and secured in proper position by releasing the clutch-members,
The free or handle ends ofthe thus ai'lapting the instrument for use as a i scriber as illustrated in Fig 2, of the drawings.
F rom the foregoing rlescription, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of my inventionwill be readily understood.
W hat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A gage and scriber, comprising a gage'- stoek casing provided with heads terminating in guide-lugs having o enings, a pair of spring'iresisted pivotal y mounted clutch members carried by said gage-stock casing intermediate said guideugs and. provided with openings in alinement with said openy ings of said lugs, one of said heads being provided with an arm terminating in a bearinglug, a scriber member pivotally mounted 1n said bearingelug, and a bar carried 1n sald openings'of said lugs and clutch members.
ing, and interposed between said base-members, said clutcl1-members being provided with friction-clutch-openings adapted to reg-I ister with said openings of said guide-lugs, a
coil spring mounted Within said casing and interposed between said Aclutch members,
and a scalebar mounted within said openings of said clutch-members and said guide-lugs.
3. A. gage and scriber, consisting ot a gagestock comprising a casing provided with heads terminating in guide-lugs having openings on each side of said casing7 spring-resisted clutch-members pivotally-mounted intermediate said heads and rovided with triction-clutch-openings in' a inement with said openings of said guide-lugs, a bar mounted in said clutch openings, an a scriber member pivotally secured to one of said heads. v ln testimony whereof'l haveaflixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT KREHLIK.
