Be it. known that I, ROBERT F. IVARHAM, citizen of the United States, residing at Applegate, in the county of Placer and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pine-Needle Pillows, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a device for providing for the inhalation of medicated Vapors or odors, such as may be employed for the treatment of asthma or lung troubles.

My invention consists of the improved device which I will hereinafter describe and claim.

The accompanying drawing is a perspective View of my device and its application. For the purpose of relieving asthmatic and like troubles, it is common to employ pillows filled with pine needles, the balsamic odors from which appear to relieve the difficulty. Such pillows are necessarily uncomfortable if used for direct support on account of the roughness and sharp points of the needles; and it is the object of my invention to so construct the device that the partcontaining the odoriferous medicament will always 4be in close proximity to the face of the user, while the portion upon which the head rests is supported upon the ordinary pillow to which the patient is accustomed.

In the construction of this device I form a receptacle of textile material which has two parallel sides A, and a transverse portion B uniting the outer ends of these receptacles. The space between the parts A A and B may be simply a continuation of the fabric, which being stitched along the inner edges of the receptacles leaves this portion 2 of one or two thicknesses of the fabric, and this space 2 is sufficiently large to receive the head of the user, and allow for any reasonable amount of movement between the sides A A and the part B. The receptacles thus formed are filled with the medicated or odoriferous substance which is to be used for the relief of the patient; and this subst-ance being pine needles and more or less rough and uncomfortable, it will be seen that the patients head lying upon the flat portion 2 willl bring the nostrils close to the parts A A, whichever side the user may be lying upon. This containing pillow or structure is laid upon the ordinary pillow 3 to which the user is accustomed, and as the head lies upon the part 2, the conformation of the pillow 3 caused by the users head, will be the same as when used without this supplemental structure, therefore the user will not be annoyed in any way by the use of this device.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desireto secure by Letters Patent is* l. A device for treating patients by inhalation of odors or vapors, said device consisting of parallel receptacles containing a filling of odoriferous substance, and an intermediate unfilled flexible fabric by which the receptacles are united.

2. A device for containing pine needles and the like for the production of odors for the treatment of asthma and the like, said device consisting of parallel separated receptacles and a connecting portion, said separated receptacles and connecting portion being all filled with the material, and an intermediate portion connecting the inner edges of the receptacles, said portion consisting of one or more thicknesses of the flexible fabric, the whole adapted to rest upon an ordinary pillow.

3. In a device for containing pine needles and like odoriferous substances, an arched portion consisting of receptacles connected in substantially U-form, an intermediate head-supporting portion consisting of one or more thicknesses of flexible fabric whereby the receptacles are maintained in position, and a pillow upon which said structure is supported.
