Description
HINGE.
APPLICATION FILED Nov. 22, 1907.

WITNESSES: 'fr A INVENTOR QMTRNEYS UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE.
HARRY M. HERR, OF LAMPETER, PENNSYLVANIA.
HINGE To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, HARRY M. HERR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lampeter, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to that class of hinges which comprise two leaves, pivoted together in a detachable manner, and has for its object to produce a hinge that may be used as the top hinge of apair of hanging shutters,
doors, gates, etc., and provides a novel,.
cheap, durable and effective means for guiding and retaining the top leaf of the pair in position while the lower hinge or hinges are being centered, when by a slight motion to bring the leaves of the top hinge to a perpendicular position the upper hinge leaves will drop into place, thus doing away with the laborious and uncertain method of getting both hinges in alinement together for hanging which is extremely hard to do with a heavy shutter or gate.
While I have illustrated my invention as applied to a simple form of detachable hinge I do not confine myself to the exact form here shown, as a slight change may be made in the construction without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings like figures indicate corresponding parts in all figures of the drawings.
Figure 1, shows the hinge as applied to the top pair on a shutter, in the act of being hung. Fig. L., illustrates an elevation of the two hinge leaves in a detached position. Fig. 3, shows a plan top view of the same. Fig. 4, shows the device as applied to a gate.
1, indicates the lower leaf of a detachable hinge secured to a window casing, and provided at its lower half with the cylindrical enlargement 2, from which extends upward the pintle 3, of smaller diameter than the enlargement 2, but concentric with it, thus providing a shoulder 4, upon which the upper member rests and turns.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 22, 1907.
Patented Sept. 15, 1908.
Serial No. 403,345.
The upper leaf 5, is secured to the shutter in the usual way, and is provided with the cylindrical socket 6, extending from its upper half and adapted to slip over and embrace the pintle 3, of the lower leaf, thus completing the hinge. Upon the top of the pintle 3, on the rear side thereof, is provided the ledge or shoulder 7, formed by slightly rounding or raising the end of said pintle 3, by an elliptical extension 8, upon which the upper hinge leaf may rest,
The mode of operation of my device is as follows: Supposing the leaf l, of the hinge to be secured to the window casing and the leaf 5, to the shutter near its upper end, and a plain pair of hinge leaves secured to the window casing and shutter near their lower ends. The shutter is raised by the hands of the operator and the lower back edge of the socket 6, of the leaf 5, rested upon the shoulder 7, of the lower leaf which will support the weight of the shutter and allow the upper leaf of the lower' hinge to pass freely over the pintle of the other Ieaf of the lower hinge until the operator gets them in alinement, when by a slight push of the upper part of the shutter backwards the edge of the socket 6, is pushed off of the shoulder 7, allowing the shutter carrying the upper leaf of the hinge to drop into engagement with the lower leaf, and the shutter then hung in place.
I/Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is z- In a detachable hinge of the vclass described, having the lower leaf provided with a pintle extending beyond the socket of the upper leaf, a shoulder formed upon the top of said pintle at the rear side thereof, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I afl-lx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARRY M, HERR.

CHAs. H. BowMAN, MABEL L. LEFEVRE.
