Be it known that I, FLOEEN CIPAR, a resident offChicago, in the county of Cook and Stateof Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drums, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

-The invention relates to musical instruments and more particularly to drums.

One object of the invention is to provide an improved construction for a drum which is' foldable and which permits the drumheads to be brought together into close proximity for convenience in carrying and which comprises a collapsible body which may be extended and secured in extended position when the instrument is to be used. This feature is particularly desirable in the larger sizes of drums, such as are commonly known as Hbass-drums.

The invention further designs to provide a drum of improved construction.

The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claim at the conclusion hereof. j

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective of a drum embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a section showing the parts in position assumed when folded together for convenience in transportation. Fig. 3 is a section, the drum-heads being shown in operative relation and the body in extended position. Fig. 4 is a detail showing the adj listing-device for one of the drum-heads.

The instrument comprises a pair of drumheads 12 each secured to a flesh-hoop 13 over which fits a retaining-hoop 14 adapted to hold the flesh-hoop in desired position to maintain the drum-head under tension. Adjacent each drum-head and within the iiesh-hoop is a body-retaining band or section 15 over which the drum-head is extended and around which the iiesh-hoop and retaining-hoop are disposed. Straining-devices in desired number for each drum-head and whereby they are held and adjusted comprise lugs or brackets 16 which are secured Specification of Letters Patent.

suitable flexible material, such as sheepskin7 which is adapted when adjusted to form a body of the proper shape between the drum-heads. Each of the ends of said body is secured to one of the body-bands 15 by an inner loop 2() and screws 21. The primary purpose of providing the body of flexible material is to permit the body to collapseso the drum-heads may be brought in close or compact relation as seen in Fig. 2 for convenience in carriage or transportation. Body-bands 15 provide means connected to the body whereto the drum-heads may be attached and body-sections which may be brought into close relation while retaining the proper relation between the ends of the body and the drum-heads. For the purpose of securing the body in extended and. operative position, separating devices or spreaders which are independent of the strainingdevices for the drum-heads are provided.

Each spreader comprises a pair of lugs or brackets 23 respectively secured to the bodybands by screws 24 and having openings therein which are adapted to receive the opposite ends of rods 25. The outer end of each bracket 23 is provided with a thumbscrew 26 adapted to impinge against one end lof the rod 25 to hold the body taut and to hold the body and drum-heads carried thereby in extended or operative position. By adjusting screws 26, the desired tension may be put on the flexible body. To permit the flexible body to be folded inwardly between the drum-heads, it is provided with a number of eye-lets 28 having openings therein for ingress and egress of air during the folding operation.

The invention possesses several important advantages. In practice it has beenfound that the collapsible body when put under tension or held taut has as good sound producing properties as a rigid body andfalso permits the body to collapse so the drum-heads can be brought into closed or compact relation for convenience in carrying. rlhis advantage is of particular moment in the use of large bass drums. The construction of the collapsible body is such that the drum-heads may be independently adjusted as desired.

The inventionis not to be understood as restricted to the particular construction set forth and described but may be modified without departing from the spirit and scope .of the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. In a musical instrument, the combination of a pair of drum-heads, and a collapsible body of flexible material therebetween.

2. In a musical instrument, the combination of a pair of drum-heads, and a collapsible body of flexible material therebe tween and having air openings therein.

3. vIn a musical instrument, the combination of a pair of drum-heads, a body-band for each of said heads, and a body of flexible material connecting said bands.

il. In a musical instrument, the combination of a body of flexible material, drumheads respectively connected to said body, and means for securing said bands so the flexible body will be held taut.

5. In a musical instrument, the combination of a pair of body-bands, a body of flexible material between said bands, drumheads respectively connected to said bands, and means for securing said bands so the flexible body will be held taut.

6. In a musical instrument, the combination of an extensible body, means for stretching said body, and drum-heads respectively connected to said body.

7. In a musical instrument, the combiat each end of the body, means for holding' the bands apart to stretch the body, and drum-heads connected to the bands.

8. In a musical instrument, the combination of a iiexible body, means for stretching said body, and drum-heads respectively connected to said body.

9. In a musical instrument, the combination of a pair of body-bands7 a body of flexiblematerial between said bands, and drumheads adjustably connected to said bands.

10. In a musical instrument, the combination of a pair of body-bands, a body of flexible material between said bands, spreaders for said body, and drum-heads adj ustably connected to said bands.
