Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 19, recs.
Application filed July 26, 1997. lerial No. 385,5556.
anjd State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'i'n Improved Spring-Binders, of which the follow 111g 1s a spec1iication.
This invention relates to improvements in i used for'te nporary purposes. I
V lieohjeot ofthis invention ?s to provide a metal binder having a coverii:.-.g of leather, or
other suitable material, to agree with the binding, in color-and texture, of the pamphlets or pages which are secured therein.
1 Afiurther objectis to avoid the oxidation 'ofisuch metal binders by a covering preventthejsame from rusting and thus discoloring the le aves contained in the binder; and
finally to pro vid -in connection with such binders, means wher'eby they may be expgfinded or distended Without difiiculty for if 4 v removal or insertion of the leaves therein. w These objects are attained'by the novel anduseful combination with a spring binder l ofasu'itable covering and separable means tor the operation of the binders, hereinafter f described and shown in theaccompanying drawings, iniwhioh: Elgure 1. 1s a perspective View of my 1m- ,lp r oved binder having leaves therein, and showing a por er of the binder covering removed. .Fig. a. iea similar perspective View,
showing the rear of the binder; Fig. 3. is an enlarged transverse section of the binder agnade in accordance with'my invention. Fig.

th'ibughout the several views.
iIn rovement consists, primarily, of suitable exible covering 1, for the binder 2, which maybe secured to the underlying metal portion by cement or other means ordinarily used for attaching flexible fabrics or subtended to be neatly foldedand secured over the edges and become to all intents and purposes an integral part of the binder.
My improved binder is preferably formed .T'Similar characters refer to similar partsof a resilient plate bent into a substantially cylindrical form having a straight back 3;
The ends of said plate being brought adjacent each other to form binding edges 4; and at a point approximately midway in the length of the binder I make two elongated openings 5 at the back of the binder, and at about the junction of the straight portion andcurved sides ,while near the irontedges are series of perforations '5.
he edges of the binder that come in contact with the leaves or pages may preferably be irregular, presenting a series of'indentations, but I do not wish to confine myself to any specialushape or form of edge whatever. Neither do i wish to beconstrained to any particular size or length of binder, or number -l inause on a sin le set of a es as for inb r; J
stance 1 may make a very small size for vest pocket, memorandums, or use several of a much larger size on heavy lodgers. I v
in h ig. t, I have shown a modified form of binder, possibly less expensive in construction, it being merely a cylinder, containing a i filling 3, secured in any suitable manner, against which the backs of the inserted pages may contact, thus forming a straight booklet, in place of the curveded'ge surface otherwise produced I prefer to make for use with my improved binder a special tool 7, in such shape that the handles 8 and 8, when pressed together cause the pronged jaws 9 and 9, to open, and if the said jaws have been inserted in the openings 5, in the binder, they will. contact With the inner side thereof, and cause the same to open or expand readily; the said openings 5, being at a greater distance apart than the thic less of the sheets it is expected to use therein, allowing the prongs 9 and 9 to enter without interfering with the contents of the binder. v
I may avoid the use of the openings 5, by making the pronged jaws 9 and 9 of an increased length and inserting them' in the binder at either end thereof, therebyphtai'ning the same results as if inserted in the openings 5.
ihe needle pointed portion 10, of thehandie 8, belonging to the expanding tool 7, is adapted to be inserted through the perforations 6, in the bindert'or the purpose of pierc ing the pages or leaves inclosed therein'and, if the said needle point-be provided With a suitable cord or thread 11, passed'through the eye 12,-in the handle 10, the leaves may be secured together in such manner that when the cli is removed, leaving the cord in the pierced. oles, they maybe secured together after the manner of a book or pamphlet.
- I am well aware that temporary binders.
and'spring clips have long been in use, also that devices for the operation of same are in.
existence, hence I do not claim either the Hi or the tool broadly, but
at I do claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
a flat face opposite the opening and a leather covering bein ssaav' or analogous covering attached to the entire outer area of the plate.
2. A spring binder comprising a resilient plate bent into a substantially cylindrical form, so that the ends of said plate are brought adjacent each other, so as to form binding edges, said plate being provided near each binding edge with a series of perforations, the center of said plate being provided with elongated openings, and a leather or analogous covering extending over the entire area of the plate and' secured thereto, said provided with perforations registering wit 1 the perforations of the plate. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN WV. STOCKWELL.
