Be it-known that I, ISAAC N. HOCKADAY, citizen of the United States, residing at Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Paint and Color EX- hibiting evices, of which the following is a specification.

It is common knowledge that builders and other purchasers of paint for the bod and trimmings of residences and other 'bui dings ordinarily experience serious difficulty in the selection of colors to produce a combination of pleasing appearance, as it has "heretofore been the practice to select the different colors merely from sample books or sample racks of differently-colored strips or boards of the size of the. usual lath or section thereof, and without any adequate facilities for determining how the contrasting shade or colors will appear when a lied over any appreciable portion of a bui 'ng. Hence serious dissatlsfaction and disappointment have often arisen.

My invention aims to overcome this difficulty by providing the necessary facilities for enabling the urchaser of paint to determine how the di erent colors and combinations thereof will a pear when applied respectively to the budding and to the frieze, base, corner boards, window and door frames, and other trimmings thereof.

More specifically speaking, my invention has for its object a show room or store room for paints, said room containing referably along one or more walls, strips oFweatherboardin simulating theside of a house, said weather oarding being laid off in sections preferably square, the res ective sections eing coated with paints of iiferent colors or shades thereof; and in connection with said sections, a plurality, or series of trimming sample members, preferably in the form of square frames, corresponding in opening to. the size of the said weatherboarding sectlons and dis laying, respectively, different colors or sha es suitable for the trimmings of the. house, whereby the salesman or purchaser may apply the said frames to the different squares or sections and secure a satisfactory impression of the proper color scheme.

The said show-board 1 is constructed of weatherboarding laid in the usual way to represent the side of a dwelling house or other building, and is-laid off in sections 2 that are preferably square as shown, said sections being respectively coated with or otherwise displaying paints of different colors or shades, and being of sufficient size to adequately indicate how the pigments of diflerent colors will appear when applied.

In connection with the show board 1, my invention comprehends a plurality of trimming sample members 3 that arepreferably in the form of square frames of a size. to circumscribe any one of the sections 2, the said frames respectively being painted with or otherwise displaying the djfierent trimming colors used on the frieze, base or corner boards, and window or door frames. In practice, these frames 3 are ap lied by the salesman or customer to the iiferent sections of the show-board, and by this means the purchaser is materially assisted in making a judicious choice of paints for the body of a house and their properly contrasting colors for the trimmings so as to produce a harmonious combination.-

Attention may be directed to the fact that when one of the frames 3 is applied to a section 2 of the show-board, the said section is caused to show through the frame independently of the remaining sections and an excellent idea 'of the color combination thereby obtained. It will thus be ap arent, that owing to the use of the frames 3 t e variously colored sections 2 of the show-board are prevented from' being confused with each other in practice, and thesaid sections can be placed closely together upon the show-board While I have .hereinbefore described my 5 invention in connection with paints, it is to be understood that it is equally applicable for use in exhibiting colors of plaster, paper, wood inofactinany connectionwhere a color combination may be displayed. 10 1 Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as-new and desired to secure by Letters Patent, is:' J v The herein-described color exhibiting device comprising a show board formed of 15 weather boarding and provided with a con- 'tinuous surface subdividedinto a plurality of contiguous, rectangular sections, each of which displays a different color and a set of rectangular trimming sample frames disemployed independently of each other, each of the said frames being of a size to circumscribeany selected one of the sections so that sections and the color of the said section shown in combination with the color of the frame.
