WILLIAM G. ABELSON, OF PLAZA, NORTH DAKOTA.
SHOE FOR SLEDS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4, 1908.
Application filed June 12, 1907- Serial No. 378.641.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W ILL'IAM (.l. AnnLsoN, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Plaza, in the county of ard, State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoes for Sleds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in shoes for sled runners and it has particular reference to a shoe carried at one side of the sled runner and formed to project laterally at an angle to a lmrizontal plane, the object being to provide a runner to have the effect of forming an effective track in the snow and which will permit of the greatest ease in draft, whereby loads of greater amount may be handled than in use of the runner ordinarily constructed.
The invention resides particularly in the novel construction, comhinat ion and arrange ment of parts, the details of which will appear in the course of the following description, in which reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, like characters of reference designating similar parts throughout the several views, wherein:
Figure 1 is a top planview of a sledcquipped with the shoe comprehended in the present invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a runner and a shoe carried thereby. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2. l 4 is a section on the line et-f of Fig. 2.
Referring specifically to the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 designates the runners of a sled of conventional form and the numeral 2 designates generally the shoes of the present invention. The shoes 2 are formed with a wide tread portion 3 and with inner flanges 4 and outer flanges 5. Said shoes at their front portion are curved upwardly as at 6, to conform to the upward curvature of the front portion of the runners if. The inner flanges 4 are disposed at an acute angle to the tread 3 and are secured to the runners 1 by fastening screws 7 This angular disposition of the flanges 4 causes the tread 3 to project laterally and upwardly from the runner by which the shoe is carried at an angle to a horizontal plane. The flanges 4; are primarily intended to cooperate with the fastening means 7 and termi nate at the commencement of the curved portions 6. The flanges 5 are employed to strengthen the structure and at the curved portions (5 their depth is gradually dimin ished, so that said flanges are of tapering outline as indicated at 8. By projecting the flanges 5, a part of the length of the curved portion 6, the shoe is materially strength ened at its point of curvature. Secured to the runners 1 at equi-distant intervals are diagonal braces S) having offset upper and lower ends 10 which are fastened to the runners l and to the flanges o by bolts or screws 1] and 12.
A shoe (mnstructed in accordance with the present invention is extremely effective in reducing the drag of the sleigh for the reason that its angular disposition will center the sleigh with relation to the track formed by the shoes and will prevent lateral rocking thereof, in which power is wasted and friction increased.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that simple and efficient means are provided for zwcomplishing the objects of the invention, but while the elements herein shown and described are well adapted to serve the functions set forth, it is obvious that various minor changes may be made in the proportions, shape and arrangement of the several parts, without departing flOll'l the spirit and scope of-the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Vhat is claimed is:
The combination with a sled runner, of a shoe formed to be secured to the side thereof and comprising a tread portion constructed with. an inner flange disposed at an acute angle thereto, with an outer flange, said tread portion being curved upwardly at its front end, and fastening means engaged through said inner flange with the runner.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM C. ABELSON. \Vitnesses L. E. LINDER, F. F. iVYoKoFF.
