THE NDRRS PETERS ca., wnsmnnromm. c.
JUSTICE C. DUNFEE, OF COLUMBIA CITY, INDIANA.
WHIP-HOLDER FOR CARRIAGES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 26, 1907.
Application filed December 13, 1906. Seri l N 347- 67.
To 00% whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JUSTICE C. DUNFEE, citizen of the United States, residing at C0- lumbia City, in the county of Whitley and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVhip-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which forin a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in whip-holders for carriagetops, and consists in the provision of a clip adapted to be held by friction to thebow of the top and having a resilient spring-arm designed to securely hold the whip 'against the clip; and the device consists, further, in various details of construction and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of the top of a carriage, showing my invention as applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view showing the whip held to a bow of the top. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the whip-holding device; and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank of metal forming the whip-holding device, showing the shape of the same before being bent, as illustrated in -Fig. 3.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the top of a carriage, B one of the brace-joints, and C one of the side braces.
.D designates a blank of metal having one end D, (shown clearly in Fig. 4 of the drawings,) which is enlarged and adapted to be turned into a roll, as disclosed by Figs. 1, 2, and 3 of the drawings, and being made of a resilient metal is adapted to yield to receive the brace or joint to which it is to be attached with suflicient-frictional force to retain the same in place.
Referring to the drawings, it will be noted that the shank portion E of the device is bent so as to form a yielding arm adapted to cooperate with the roll to form clamping means whereby the whip N may be held frictionally in the manner shown in Fig. l of the drawings. The extreme end E of said shank portion is preferably bent hook shaped, as shown, for the purpose of allowing said shank portion to be thrown outward or away from the braceengaging portion thereof when it is desired to adjust the whip to the holder, the resiliency of the shank portion being sufficient to hold the whip against the roll.
When it is desired to withdraw the whip, it may be easily done by merely pulling upon the handle thereof and withdrawing the whip from the holding device.
While I have shown my device as applied to the top of a carriage, it will be understood that it may be utilized in connection with any other device, if desired, without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
WVhat I claim is A device for holding whips consisting of a blank of metal having wings of different widths at one end thereof, each of which is bent to form a resilient shell adapted to frictionally engage an object to which the device may be applied, the shank portion of the latter adapted to cooperate with the shell to form clamping means to hold the whip, one end of the shank portion of the device being inwardly bent and against which the whip is adapted to bear in inserting the same between the shank portion of the holder and said roll, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. JUSTICE C. DUNFEE. Witnesses:
OTTO E. GRANT,
OR'ION L. DUNFEE.
