Description

No. 330,335. PATENTED SEPT. 4, 1906;
L. 0. KURTZ.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 22; 1904.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 4, 1906.
Application filed November 22, 1904. Serial No. 233,849.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI O. KURTZ, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Beaver Falls, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saws, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in saws, and more particularly to that type commonly known as "meat-saws and handsaws.
The invention has for its object the provision of novel'means whereby the saw-blades of these saws may be detachably secured within the frames of the saws without the use of screws or nuts and bolts.
Briefly described, my invention contemplates providing the framework of a saw with slots in each end, and the saw-blade I provide upon each end with a yoke. A novel form of .instrument is employed for securing the saw-blade within the framework, whereby it will be firmly held.
The above construction will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically pointed out in the claim, and, referring to the drawings accompanying this application, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a saw constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one end of the frame of my improved saw. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one end of the sawblade. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the opposite end of the saw-frame to that illus trated in Fig. 3, and Fig. 6 is the novel instrument which I employ to secure the saw-blade within the saw-frame.
In the accompanying drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates a saw-frame which is of a contour corresponding to that of meatsaws and handsaws, and this frame is preferably constructed of metal and has secured to its one corner by suitable screws or bolts 2 a handle 3. Ordinarily the ends of the frame 1 of the saw have had the saw-blades secured to it by set-screws, bolts, or rivets; but I intend to dispense with these fastening means and provide the ends of the frame with slots 4 5. The end of the frame, as designated by 6, which has the slot 5 formed therein is cut away, as indicated at 7 7, forming shoulders 8, the object of which will be presently described.
The ends of the saw-blade 9 are provided with the U-shaped pieces of metal 10, which are brazed or otherwise permanently secured upon the ends of the saw-blade. The reference-numeral 11 designates a lever which is provided with a tapering end 12 and a slot 14, and this lover or tool is employed for securing the saw-blade within the frame of the saw.
The operation of securing the saw-blade within the frame 1 is as-follows: The one end of the saw-blade is placed in the slot 4, and the U-shaped pieces of metal 10 are caused to engage the edges of the frame adjacent to the slot 4. The tool or lever 11 is then placed over the blade of the saw, the saw entering the slot 14 of the tool or lever, and the beveled edge 12 of the lever is engaged in the cut-away portions 7 7 of the ends 6 of the saw-frame, at which time the U-shaped pieces of metal 10 will be engaged by the lever, and when said lever is forced forward to the position shown in Fig. 1 the U-shaped piece of metal 10 will be engaged behind the ends 6 of the frame, said U-shaped pieces of metal engaging the edges of the frame adjacent to the slot 5. The operation of placing this end of the saw-blade within the frame has slightly sprung the frame 1, and when said saw-blade has been so placed within the slots 4 and 5 of the frame said frame will normally hold the blade therein on account of the tension which said frame has been placed under when placing the blade in position.
The use of the saw will continually force the blade into the slots 4 and 5, and it will be impossible for the saw-blade to be removed from the frame 1 until the U-shaped pieces of metal have been struck by an instrument or the lever 11 used to slide the saw-blade without the slotted ends of the frame, the latter operation being performed by inserting the tool or lever 11 under the saw with the saw in the slot 14, the tool or lever eing within the frame and at an angle opposite to that in which it is shown in Fig. 1, and then lifting the tool or lever so as to pry the sawblade out of the slot 5.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided novel means for securing saw-blades within a frame and that the use of set-screws and the like fastening means have been dispensed with, thereby re ducing the expense of manufacture to a minimum, at the same time roviding a novel saw having a detachable b ade, the many advantages of which will be apparent to those accustomed to handle the same.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a saw-frame, having lateral arms, said arms being slitted on their ends, and a blade having an abutment on each end, said blade fitting in said slits in the arms with the abutments at the ends of the 5 blade bearing on the outer edges of said arms, one of said arms being provided With notches in its end, said notches being adapted to temporarily receive a lever whereby the adjacent erlld of the saw-blade may be sprung into ace.
P In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
LEVI O. KURTZ.
