Be it known that I, PETER MGKAY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of Day Dawn, Murchison, IVestern4 Australia, Australia, have invented a new and Improved Drill-Chuck, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. T nis invention relates to improvements in chucks 'for rock-drills or other boringtools, the object being to provide a chuck oi' i simple construction in winch a drill may be r quickly placed and held securely m a way in i which the drill may have sui'licient yield to prevent its breaking under the pounding or jarring strain of the driving mechanism.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the general description.
I will describe a drill-chuck embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section on the line :c a; of Fig. 2 of a drill-chuck embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view substantially at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 'y y of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is an end view of a clamping-nut employed.
The chuck comprises a tubular member 1 for receiving the drill or boring-tool 2. The bore of this portion 1 is slightly tapered, the larger diameter being at the outer end. The bore communicates wdth a chamber 3, arranged between lateral o'lisets 4 5, and the innermost wall of the chamber 3 is provided with a recess 6 for receiving the end of the drill or boring-tool.
The offset 4 is provided with a chamber 7, which communicates with the chamber 3 through an opening S, and the. ol'lset 5 is provided with a chamber 9, which communicates with the chamber 3 through an opening 10.
Arranged in the chamber' 3 is a clampingyoke 11 for the drill. At one side this yoke or ring 11 has a screw-threaded extension 12,
which passes through the opening S and is engaged by a clamping-nut 13, having an angular portion with which a wrench or similar tool may be engaged. The nut 1,3 is prevented from being wholly disengaged from Patented Dee. 18, 1906,
the threaded portion 12 by meansof a collar g 14, attached to a reduced extension of said i, threaded portion. Arranged between the j inner end of the nut 13 and a shoulder 15 in j the chamber 7 is a split spring-washer 16. j At the opposite side the yoke or ring member i 11 has a threaded projection 17', which passes l through the opening into the chamber 9, and arranged between a washer 18 on the l said projection and a nut 19 engaging with l the thread thereof is a spring 20, which is coiled around said projection.- This coiled i sprinO' has about twice the pressure of the l D i split washer 16, thus holding the coupling l at all times in line with the tool space or chamber 3.
I/Vhen the nut 13 is slackened to release a drill or when a new drill is to be placed in l position, the nut 19 is prevented from being l wholly disconnected from the projection 17 by means oi a collar 21, secured to a reduced extension on said projection 17.
Arranged-within the opening of the collar or ring member 11 is a bushing 22, having an interior annular rib 23, designed to engage in a channel 24, formed in the drill and extending about one-halt1 the circumference oi' the same. This rib engaging in the channel 24 holds the drill in position, and when the rib 23 becomes worn the bushing may be turned to present a new part of said rib for engaging in said channel.
In inserting the drill the proper position of the channel 24 will be indicated by the'alinement of the notch 25 in the tubular portion 1 with the notch 26, formed in the drill.
tion l the drill, when the clamping-nut is set, will engage with the wall of said opening at the outer end, and the inner end of the drill will engage with the wall of the recess or chamber 6 at the opposite side to the abovementioned engagement of the drill with the wall of the opening in the part l, and thus the drill will be permitted to yield laterally when the machine is in operation.
The edges of the nuts and washers will be rounded oli", as clearly indicated in Fig. 2, so as to prevent any cutting action between parts as they are rotated one relatively to another.

A drill-chuck comprisinga body portion having a tubular member for receiving the drill, the said body portion also having a chamber at the inner end of the bore of said tubular member, the said bore being tapered, a recess in the inner wall of said chamber, a clamping-yoke arranged in the chamber, a bushing 1n said yoke having an interior annular rib, threaded projections 'extended from said yoke, a clamping-nut on one of said projections, a spring-washer with which said nut is designed to engage, a nut on the other of said projections, andv a` spring engaging with the nut and surrounding said other projection, vthe said spring having a greaterpressure strength than said washer.
