DISPLAY RACK.
APPLICATION FILED MAYIB 1906 A TTOR/VEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

COLLAPSIBLE HANGER COMPANY or VIRGINIA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
INCORPORATED, A.- CORPORATION DISPLAY-RACK.
Patented Nov. 20. 1906.
Application filed May 18,1906. $erial1Io. 317,586.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, MARK E. HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Display-Rack, 'of which the following is a specification.
This invention as relation to displayracks; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts, as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and attractive rack adapted to be used in stores or in show-windows for the purpose of displaying goods and merchandise in an attractive manner.
The rack consists, primarily, of verticallyextending supports with arms which may be easily and readily detached and applied to the said supports and when not in use may be hung upon the supports in such manner as to be out of the way.
The invention resi es in the novel construction as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the display-rack. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of one form of the invention. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of another form of the invention, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view out on the line 4 4 of Fig.3.
The rack consists of the uprights 1, any number of which may be provided. In the form of the invention as shown in Fig. 2 the upright 1 is cylindrical and is provided in its side with the longitudinally-extending elongated opening 2 and on the opposite side and extending parallel with the same with a similarly-positioned opening 3. The opening 3, however, is not as long as the opening 2. The said openings 2 and 3 are preferably located just to one si e of the diameter of the upright 1. This location of the said openings is desired in order that arms may extend from'the upright 1 in opposite directions.
The arm 4 is provided at its inner end with the curved edge 5. Theupwardly-extending lug 6 is located at the lower end of said curved edge 5. The breadth of the arm 4 at the base of the lug 6 is substantially the same as the length of the opening 3 in the support 1. The inner end of the arm 4 is adapted to pass through the said opening 3, and the said lug 6 extends up behind the upper edge of the opening 3 in the manner as shown in Fig. 1. The curved edge 5 of the said arm is located in the interior of the upright 1 and the lower edge of the arm 4 near its inner end resting upon the lower edge of the opening 2 of the said upright 1. As the opening 2 is in a horizontal plane above that of the opening 3, it will be seen that when a weight is applied to the outer end of the arm 4 the lower edge of the opening 2 serves in a manner as the fulcrum-point of a lever and the extreme inner end of the arm 4 as the working end thereof. However, the said arm 4 is retained in stationary position by the relative positions of the said openings 2 and 3. The inner end of the arm 4 is provided with the downwardly-extending portion 7, between the edge of which and the lower edge of the arm 4 is located a notch 8. When it is desired that the arm 4 should not be in extended position with relation to the support 1 the inner end of the arm 4 may be removed from the opening 3, and the said arm maybe permitted to swing down along the side of upright 1, the notch 8 receiving the lower edge of the opening 2, in which position the said arm cannot swing or sway.
In the form of the invention as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the inner end of the arm 4 does not extend all the way across the upright 1, but is provided with a lip 9, which is adapte to pass under the diametrically extending pin 10, located in the interior of the said support 1. The said pin 10 acts as a substitute for the openings 3. The uprights 1 may be provided at their upper ends with suitable bails 11, by means of which the said uprights may be hung from hooks; also, the said arm 4 may be provided with hooks or recesses 12, from which the goods may be supported.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A display-rack consisting of an upright having an opening in its wall, an arm adapted to pass through and rest upon the lower edge of said opening,,said arm having at its inner end a lip located in a plane below the lower edge of the major portion of the arm, said lip being adapted to pass under a fixed portion of said upright.
2. A display-rack consisting of an upright having an opening in the wall thereof, an arm adapted to rest upon the lower edge of said ICC opening and having its end located within said upright, the inner end of said arm being provided with a lip which is located in a plane below the major portion of the lower edge of said arm and which is adapted to pass under a fixed portion of said support, said lip having a lug located at its rear end and adapted to pass behind said portion of the support engaged by the lip.
3. A display-rack consisting of a support having an opening in the wall thereof, an arm adapted to enter said opening, said arm having at its inner end an extension extending substantially at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the said arm, a notch formed at the intersection of the edges of the said arm and extension and adapted to receive the lower edge of said opening, said extension being of such configuration as to engage a fixed portion of the support and hold the arm in extended position with relation thereto.
4. A display-rack consisting of a sup ort, said support having in opposite sides alined openings, one located in a plane above the I other, an arm adapted to pass through the elevated opening and rest at its lower edge upon the lower edge thereof, said arm having an extension provided with a lip adapted to enter the lower opening and bear at its upper edge against the upper edge thereof.
5. A'display-rack consisting of a support, said support having in its side alined openings located at different horizontal planes,
