GEORGE CLINTON VVITT, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
FIREPRQOF REOEPTA CLE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 20, 1906.
Application filed October 21. 1905. Serial No. 288,849.
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE CLINTON WITT, a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireproof Receptacles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in fireproof receptacles, the object of the invention being to provide a can or receptacle especially adapted for containing oil-saturated Waste or other combustible material which will absolutely prevent the spread of fire should the combustible material ignite and confine the fire to the receptacle, as the can or receptacle is supported above the floor and improved means is provided. for preventing the can-cover being left open, but compelling the same to close by gravity when released.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in vertical section illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view illustrating the hinge connection between the body and cover, and Figs. 4 and 5 are views of a modification.
'1 represents the can-body, which is preferably, although not necessarily, made of corrugated form and having feet 2, supporting the can-bottom above the floor. These feet 2 are strengthened by cross-braces 3 and are preferably made of sheet metal riveted to the depending flange at the can-bottom.
4 represents the can-cover, which is provided with a depending flange 5 to engage over the upper ring end of the body 1 and tightly close the same. The flange 5 is cut away, so as not to interfere with a metal strap 6, secured to the upper body-ring. The ends of the strap 6 are bent outward, forming arms 9, as shown, and similar arms 10 are formed at the inner ends of straps 7, secured to the flange 5 of cover 4. Bolts or rivets 8 are passed through alined openings in the outer ends of arms 9 and 10 to hinge the cover to the body 1.
The arms 10 are made with lugs or extensions 11, having inwardly-projecting flanges or shoulders 12, which when the cover is raised strike arms 9 and limit the opening movement of the cover. As these stops are so located as to prevent the cover being opened half-way, the cover will when released fall by gravity and close the body, thus absolutely preventing possibility of the cover being left in a raised position through the carelessness of an employee.
In the modification shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the lugs or extensions 11 and shoulders 12 are dispensed with, and a chain or other flexible device 13 is secured at one end to the inside of the body adjacent to the hinge connection, and the upper end of the chain is secured to the cover. This chain is of such length that it will prevent the cover from being raised to or beyond its center of gravity, and hence compelling the cover to close by gravity when released. A suitable handle or handhold 14 is secured upon the cover its opening.
'With both constructions of can it will be observed that the arms 9 and 10 extend outward from the can and the pivot or hinge connection is at the outer ends of the arms, which permits the flanged cover to move freely from and onto the can-body, affords a clear large opening for the removal or insertion of material from or into the can, and also insures an absolutely tight and fireproof receptacle, as any fire which may take place in the can will be confined thereto by reason of the tight-fitting cover, the tight body, and the fact that the body is supported above the floor.
Slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a receptacle and a cover therefor, of outwardly-projecting arms on the receptacle, outwardly-projecting arms on the cover hinged to said first-mentioned arms, and means cooperating with the hinge for preventing the cover from being raised to or beyond a vertical position.
2. The combination with a body, of a cover having a flange to overlap the upper end of the body, outwardly-projecting arms to facilitate pivotally connected I the body,
outwardly-projecting arms secured, to the cover and pivotally connected to the i5 body-arms at their outer ends, and means for limiting the opening movement of the cover causing it to close by gravity When released.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib- 20 mg Witnesses.
GEORGE CLINTON WITT.
