T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN N. KEATHLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elmore, in District No. 17 of Indian Territory, have invented certain new and useful Imrovements in Cotton-Choppers, of which the fbllowing is a s ecification.
The object o my invention is to provide certain new and useful im rovements in cotton-choppers, which will e hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my iinproved cotton-chopper. Fig. 2 is a side elcvation thereof. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the followin description and indicated in all the views o the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the main frame of my improved cotton-chopper, which is mounted upon a transverse axle 2, supported by traveling wheels 3, provided with tractor surfaces or eriph'eries to prevent sli ping. The main ame 1 has secured to its ront end a ole or tonfrue 4, and to its rear end is secure a vertically and rearwardly extending spring-bar 5, supporting the drivers seat G at its upper end.
Mounted upon the transverse beam 1 of the frame is an upright post or standard 7, and a similar post or standard 8 is mounted upon the rear cross-bar of the frame 1. A longitudinallyextending lever 9 is fulcrnmed intermediate of its ends on the post 7 and is provided at its rear end with a handle 10, by which it may be rocked. The post or standard 8 is provided with teeth or notches S, with which the rear end of the lever 9 is intended to be engaged, so as to hold the lever in different angular positions. To the front end of the lever 9 there is secured a depending arm 11., to the lower end of which is secured a beam 12. .lo cach end. of the beam 12 is connected a yoke 13, the oppositely-extending arms of which are secured to and support the inner auxiliary frame 14. The extremities of the yoles 13 pass through eyes or similar guides 15 on the main framework and are guided. thereby. As the lever El) is rocked so as to elevate or depress its front end it is evident that the inner frame 14 will be raised or lowered.
In the inner frame 14 there is journaled a longitudinally-extendiiig shaft 16, mounted at its ends on the transverse bars of the said frame and carrying a cylinder 17, which is provided with any desired number of radially-extending blades or knives 18, extending longitudinally thereof and secured to its periphery, preferably by means of counter'- sunk bolts. The shaft 16 is formed with a rearward extension 16a, which is provided with a bevel-pinion 19, meshing with a similar pinion .20 on the adjacent end of a shaft 21. rlhe other end of the shaft Z1 is pivotally mounted in a side bar of the frame 1. A boxing '.22 is secured on the shaft 21, and to the said boxing there is connected a rearwardly-extending lever 23, arranged in convenient relation to the drivers seat so that by the proper manipulation the shaft Z1 may be moved so as to carry its pinion 20 into and out of mesh with the pinion 19, and thereby start or stop the revolution of the set of knives 18. A. hub of one of the traveling wheels 3 is extended inwardly and is provided with a sprocket-wheel 25, connected by sprocket-chain to a corresponding wheel 24 on the shaft 21, so that the cylinder 17 and the knives may derive their motion from the main traveling wheels.
The inner frame 14, as best seen in Fig. 4, is V-shaped in cross-section, so as to permit the cotton to stand straight where the machine passes over it. At the front end of the main or outside frame 1` Scrapers 26 are mounted 27 designates two plow-beams that are pivotally connected at their front ends to the axle 2 and pass rearwardly therefrom through vloops 28 on the rear cross-bar of the main frame. rlrailing plows 2E) are carried on the rear ends of said beams 27.
In the practical operation of the machine the outer frame travels from place to place with the inner frame raised into an in operative position by means before described. When it is desired to chop the cotton, the inner frame 14 is lowered, which will carry the cylinder 17 and the set of knives 18 into operative position, and then by the manipulation of the lever 23 the shafts .21 and 16 may be coupled together to impart motion from the main wheels 3 to the shafts 16, and colisequentlv also to the knives.
l laving thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is l ln a machine et the character described, the crunbination of an outer main frame provided with traveling wheels, an inner vertically-adjustzible frame, a lever fulcrumed on the main frame, yokcs and connecting-boains secured together and to said lever at one side of its fulcruin, and alsosecured to the inner frame whereby the manipulation of the lever will raise and lower the inner frame, a cylinder mounted in said inner frame and provided with a set ol' radial knives on its pe.- riphery, and means for driving said cylinder.

A machine of the character described, comprising an outer main frame provided with traveling wheels, an intermediate transverse beam, an inner vertically-adjustable frame mounted Within the main frame at one side of said beam7 a standard mounted on said beam, a lever fulerumed on .said standard, transverse yokes secured to the inner frame, a beam connecting said `vokes and connected to one ond of said lever, guides secured to the main frame and encircling the ends of said Lvokes, cotton-chopping devices carried by the inner frame, and means for actuating said device.

A machine of the character described comprising an outer main frame provided l with traveling wheels, and an intermediate cross-beam, en inner vertically-a(ljustable frame mounted in the main frame at one side of said cross-beamI means for raising and lowering the inner frame7 said means includ ing a standard mounted on said cross-beniny and e lever fulcrumed intermediate its ends on said standard, a shaft mounted longitudinell;r in the inner frame and provided with a rear extension projecting into the main frame at the other side of the intermediate cross-beam, cultivating devices carried bv said shaftJ means for actuating said. shaft trein the traveling wheels and e notched detent-bar secured to the rear end of the main lrame and designed for engagement with the rear end of the aforesaid ever.
