To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAMDJLUNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denison, in the county of Crawford and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Snow-Shovels, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to snow-shovels; and one of the objects of the same is to provide a device of this character which can be reversed to present a new edge to ,the work when one edge has become worn or injured.

Another object is to provide a snow-shovel with a pivoted blade which will turn laterally to a limited extent, so that the snow may be carried up and off the blade at one side thereof and which will be deflected in case the blade strikes an obstruction.

These and other objects are attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective viewof a snowshovel made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the shovel deflected to one side on the pivot of the'blade. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the blade reversed on the handle.

Referring to the drawings for a'more particular description'of my invention, the nu meral 1 designates theshovel-blade, which is preferably made of sheet-steel of the proper thickness and curved lengthwise on the arc of a circle. The handle 2 rnay be made of wood or metal and is rovided with a curved seat or bearing 3 for the blade. A hole is made in the blade, and a pivot bolt or screw 4 passes through the hole and through the curved bearin portion 3 of the handle 2. is formed in the blade 1, anda screw or bolt 6 passes through the slot 5 and through the bearing 3 of the handle, said bolt being of a size to permit the blade to turn laterally on the pivot 4 within the limits of the curved slot 5, as will be understood. If desired, however, the blade 1 may be turned. to one side on the pivot-bolt 4 and then secured in place by tightening the bolt 6. When thus adjusted, the snow will ride up the blade and ofi upon the side of the shovel. When the lower edge 7 of the blade 1 becomes worn'or should it be injured in any way, the blade may be reversed, the upper edge 8 being used as the working edge, the slot 5 then being disposed below the pivotal point of the blade'and the bolts 4 and 6 being transposed, as will be understood.

In using my snow-shovel it may be pushed with its lower edge bearing upon the surface to be cleaned, the o erator grasping the crossbar 9 of the hand 0 2, the snow passing up and off at one side of the blade, provided it is adjusted or manipulated properly to be used in this way. The shovel may also be used for casting or heavin snow ina manner similar to the'use of an ordinary shovel.

From the foregoing it will be obvious that my snow-shovel is of simple construction, may be manufactured at slight cost, is strong, durable, and efficient in use, can be reversed when worn, and may be used to quickly and thoroughly clear a surface of snow.

Having thus described my invention, 'what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is

1. A snow-shovel com rising a curved sheet-metal'blade pivote to a handle and means for limiting the pivotal movement of the blade.

2. A snow-shovel comprising a reversible blade, said blade being curved longitudinally. 3. A snow shovel com rising a curved sheet-steel blade, pivotal y connected to a handle and provided with a curved slot, and a bolt passing through the slot and connected to the handle to permit the blade to have a limited lateral movement on its ivot.

4. A snow-shovel provided with a reversible blade pivoted to a handle andmeans for limiting the pivotal action of the blade.

5. A snow-shovel consisting of a'curved sheet-steel blade, a handle having a curved seat or bearing for said blade, a bolt for pivoting the blade to the seat or bearing, said blade having an arc-sha ed slot therein, and a bolt assing through t e slot and handle to limit the pivotal movement of the blade.
