Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.-
' Be it known that I, CHARLES FRANOIs HUN- TooN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Brake- Beams, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formin part of this specification, in which igure 1 is a side elevational view of my improved brake-beam. Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in brake-beams, the object being to enable the brake-heads to be readily and quickly removed in making repairs without necessitating the unhanging of the beam or the disturbance of the integrity of the truss.
With this object in view the invention consists in the novel arrangement, construction, and combination of the several parts, all as will hereinafter be described and afterward pointed out in the claims.
My present invention is designed particularly as an improvement upon the type of removable brake-head shown in the Cornwall patent, No. 780,978, dated January 30, 1905.
In the drawings, 1 indicates the compression member, and 2 the tension member.
3 is a thrust-block against which the end of the compression member is seated and through which the tension-rod passes, a nut 4 securing the parts together and enabling a camber to be placed in the compression member. The thrust-block 3 is provided with a flange 5 on its inner end, which flange is cut away, as shown in Fig. 3, to form a lockingrecess 5*. The outer end of the thrust-block is provided with a perforated boss 6. The brake-head 7 is provided with perforated bosses 9 on its ends, the inner one of which is designed to fit in the recess of the flange 5, and so tend to hold the brake-head against rotation, while the outer boss registers with the boss 6 of the thrust-block. A key or wedge-pin 10 may pass through the alining openings of the bosses 6 and 9, so as to not only look the brake-head against rotary movement, but also against longitudinal movement. The brake-head with the two perforated bosses 9 can be used at either end of the beam, and in order to also use the thrustblock at either end of the beam, and thus save two castings, one for the right and the other for the left, the flange 5, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, is provided with a second notch 5".
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. In a trussed brake-beam, the combination with a thrust-block having a notched flange at its inner end and a perforated boss at its outer end, a brake-head having a projection on its inner end extending into the notch of said flange and having a perforated boss on its outer end registering with the perforated boss of the thrust-block, and a fastening device passing through said perforated bosses; substantially as described.
2. In a trussed brake-beam, the combination with a thrust-block having a notched flange on its inner end, a brake-head having similar perforated bosses on its inner and outer ends, the boss on the inner end entering the notch in said flange, and means cooperating with the boss on the outer end of said brake-head for holding said brake-head in position; substantially as described.
3. In a trussed brake-beam, the combination with a thrust-block having a perforated boss, of a brake-head fitting on said thrustblock and provided with a registering perforated boss, the perforations in said bosses being of substantially the same size, and a fastening device passing through said perforated bosses so as to hold the parts immovably together; substantially as described.
4. The herein-described thrust-block, the same having a circumferentially notched flange at its inner end and a perforated boss at its outer end; substantially as described.
