Description
No. 813,420. PATENTED FEB. 27, 1906.
P. W. HIBBARD.
BOB SLEIGH. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 24, 1905.
E GM w MMA UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PAUL W. HIBBARD, OF JEFFERSON, WISCONSIN.
' BOB-SLEIGH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 27, 1906.
To a, whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PAUL W. HIBBARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jefferson, in the county of J eiferson and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bob-Sleighs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to the running-gear for bob-sleighs, the particular object being to so construct the hound that it will obviate all tendency of the sleigh to tip and at the same time simplify and add to the rigidity of the front or turning bob; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts to be fully set forth hereinafter and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a bob-sleigh embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same part in section, as indicated by line 2 2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. v
Referring by letter to the drawings, A is the reach, to which at the rear is secured a bob of any suitable construction, and B indicates the front bolster, pivoted by means of a bolt (1. The said bolster is provided with the usual rub-plate a. A king-bolt c secures the bolster to the cross-brace of the front bob. This cross-brace is provided with a rub-plate 6, upon which the upper plate rests.
A ring or hound D, preferably of angleiron, is secured by bolts d d to the outer end of the cross-brace C, having its downturn flange fitted into kerfs in the latter, and its horizontal flange rests upon the upper face thereof. This ring is concentric with the king-bolt c and is of a diameter approXimately equal to the distance between the runners of the bob, and consequently gives a broad base to support the load upon the sleigh, which bears on the center rub-plates and upon the ring D at the three points where the reach A and the bolster B contacts herewith. The latter is also provided with rub-plates e e. The runners E have suitable knees F, which are secured by bolts f to the cross-brace C on either side of the ring or hound D, and pivoted to the said runners at their upturned end is a bar G of the tongue H, which is also suitably braced. Bolted to said tongue is the usual whiffletree-clip 9, having a lug h, to which is pivoted a barrel i. The latter serves as a housing for a bolt j, that is secured to the hound D, and interposed between the head of the bolt j and the inner end of the barrel i is a coil-spring K. This yielding connection between the tongue and bob prevents breakage or strain when the bob rises or falls, due to ruts, &c. The joint or pivot in the reach A also serves this purpose and permits freedom of motion to the rear bob.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a front bob for sleighs, a metal ring secured to the cross-brace of said bob, a kingbolt supported in said cross-brace, and concentric with said ring, a tongue pivoted to said bob, and a tension-spring secured to the tongue and said metal ring, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Jefferson, in the county of J eiferson and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
PAUL W. HIBBARD.
Witnesses:
