.COIVIBINED BOX AND TARGET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 13, 1906.
Application filed January 5, 1905. Serial No. 239.718.
T0 all whom/,it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PETER R. WARREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookline, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Box and Target, of which the following is a speciication.
My invention relates to an improvement in boxes for containing toy guns and other toy devices for discharging proj ectiles; and it consists in providing a box comprising a body or inner portion adapted to slide endwise within an outer casing, with a target forming a portion of said body,- said target having an aperture provided with a hinged flap which acts to retain within the box a projectile passing through the aperture in the target.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective vieW of my improved box with the sliding body partially drawn out of its casing to disclose the target at one end thereof. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the target end of the box-body.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a box composed of a body or inner portion 2, adapted to slide endwise within an outer cover or casing 3 and adapted to contain a toy gun or other device for discharging projectiles. Across the open side of the body 2, at one end thereof, extends a part 4, which is secured to the sides of the body 2, as shown in Fig. 2. This part 4 when vthe box-body is partially drawn out from the casing, as shown in Fig. 1, forms a target which may bear any desired device and is provided at or near the center with an aperture 5, over which fits a flap 6, hinged at 7, Fig.` 2, so as to swing inwardly. If the target bears the representation of a human head, as shown, the aperture 5 may represent its mouth wide open to allow of the passage of an accurately-aimed proj ectile into the box, the hinged flap 6, which is preferably partially bent back, as shown in Fig. 2, serving to deflect the projectile downward into the box and prevent its escape therefrom by rebounding, thereby removing any doubt as to the number of projectiles which have passed through the opening in the target. By securing the target to the box it Will always be at hand ready for use by placing the box in a suitable position.
When the box is in use, the body 2 lies wholly within and is inclosed throughout its length by the shell or outer casing. To remove the toy gun or similar device for which the box is used, the body 2 is withdrawn from theouter casing, and the article can be readily taken from the box through the opening at the side of the part 4.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The herein-described box, comprising an outer casing or shell and a body adapted to slide endwise within said casing, and having one face or side open throughout more or less of its length, an apertured section partly covering said open side of the body and having on its inner surface a iiap that projects over the adjacent aperture in said section, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The herein-described combined box and target comprising an outer casing or shell and a body adapted to slide endwise within said casing and having one face or side o en throughout the greater part of its lengt a target section extending across said open side at one end of the body of the box and having an aperture formed therein, the iiap produced by forming said aperture being connected at its upper end to said target-section and extending inwardly within the body of the box, said body and casing being of such proportions that the body is adapted to lie wholly within the casing and have the target-section thereof covered and concealed by the casing.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this 31st day of December, 1904.
PETER R. WARREN.
Witnesses ALEX. P. BRowNE, ELLEN B. ToMLINsoN.
