' w'mwu UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDGAR Gr. ANTHONY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PICTURE-FRAME.
No. 811,355. A
Application filed May 16, 1905. Serial No. 260,624.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR G. ANTHONY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Picture-Frames, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to frames for pictures; and the object thereof is to provide an improved frame of this class which may be composed of one or more parts and which when composed of one part is formed from a blank'stamped or cut from sheet metal and which may be conveniently folded, so as to make a picture-frame which is especially designed for use in connection with small pic tures, and which when composed of more than one part or of a number of parts is also formed so that the separate parts can be folded together so as to make a complete frame, the separate parts when extended being substantially of the form of the blank from which the picture-frame is made when composed of one piece or part.
The invention is fully disclosed in the fol lowing specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate arts of my improvement are designated y suitable reference-characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank which I employ when makingmy improved pictureframe of one piece or art; Fig. 2, a front view of the frame comp ete; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5, a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the means employed for making a picture-frame of a number of parts; Fig. 6, a front view of a picture-frame complete when made from the parts shown in Fig. 5; Fig. 7, a section on the line 7 7 of Fig. 6, and Fig. 8 a section on the line 8 8 of Fig. 6.
In the practice of my invention as shown in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, I cut from a suitable sheet of metal a frame member a, one side of which is provided with a folding member a adapted to be folded along the line a and the opposite side of which is provided with a narrow folding strip a adapted to be folded along the line a and both ends of the frame member a are provided with narrow folding strips (1., adapted to be folded along the lines 5 M. In Fig. 2 I have shown a frame made from the blank shown in Fig. 1, and in form- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 30, 1906.
ing this frame the folding side member a is folded over the frame member to form the back of the pictured'rame, and the strips 0. and a are then folded backwardly and around the corresponding edges of the folding side member or back (L as clearly shown at b in Figs. 3 and 4. After the parts a a and a. have been folded in the manner described they are secured together by headed and preferably ornamental fastening devices 0, which are passed backwardly through the corners of the frame and through the side and end portions thereof, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 and as also shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
The fastening devices 0 may be of any desired form, and, if preferred, ordinary brads or similar fastening devices may be employed; but other forms of fastening devices may be employed, as will be readily understood.
In Figs. 5 to 8, inclusive, I have shown a frame composed of a main frame member (1, a folding side or back member d a narrow folding strip (1 at the side of the frame member d opposite the folding side or back member (1 and two end strips (1 all of said parts d (Z and at being hinged to the main frame member cl, as shown at (i It will be observed that the strip d opposite the folding side or back member d is not as long as the frame member (1, the object of this being to provide means whereby the members (i and d may be folded over the back member (1 without having the ends of the members (1 and d overlap. In making a frame from the parts shown in Fig. 5 the member (1 is folded over the frame members d to form the back of the frame, and the end members d and the side member (1 are then folded over the corresponding edges of the back member (I and secured thereto by suitable fastening devices e, which are passed therethrough, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and suitable holes are provided for this purpose.
In both forms of construction the fastening devices 0 are preferably provided with ornamental heads, and in this way I may pro vide a frame of any desired strength or size, the parts (1, d d and cl being composed of any desired material.
In making the frame shown in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, any suitable sheet metal may be employed, and in making the frame shown in Figs. 5 to 8, inclusive, wood or metal may be employed, and the frame members a and (1 may be ornamented in any desired manner.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the chief feature of my invention consists in the main frame member and a folding side member adapted to form the back of the complete frame, together with suitable means for holding the folding back member and the main frame member together.
My improved picture-frame is easily adapted for use in cases where pictures are frequently changed, and especially for show and advertising purposes where it is desired to frequently change the picture or other device in the frame, and by means of my im provement one card or picture may be easily removed from the frame and another inserted whenever desired.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A frame of the class described, comprising a frame member having a folding side member at one side thereof adapted to be folded over and to form the back of the frame, folding endmembers and a folding strip opposite the folding side member adapted to be folded over the corresponding edges of the side member, substantially as shown and described.
2. A frame of the class described, comprising a frame member having a folding side member at one side thereof adapted to be folded over and to form the back of the frame, folding end members and a folding strip opposite the side member adapted to be folded over the corresponding edges of the side member, and means for securing the said parts together at points around the frame member, substantially as shown and described.
3. A frame of the class described, composed of a blank stamped from sheet metal and comprising aframe member, a folding side member connected with one side thereof and adapted to be folded over the frame member and to form the back of the frame, a folding strip opposite the folding side member and folding end members at each end of the frame, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoingas my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 10th day of May, 1905.
EDGAR G. ANTHONY.
