Patented Jen. 23, 1GO-6.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that We, TnoMAs F. Bonn-E and' Tueurs L. VALLnLr, citizens or the United Stetes, residing etA Newcastle, in the county of Lawrence end State oi eunsylvenie, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Return-Bells, of which the iollowing is a. specicetion.
Our invention relates to return-bells, and has for its object the improvement of toys of this nsture by so constructing the bell that 'when in oerstion e clicking sound is made by the bel The construction and o eration of our in- Vention will be fullyr exp eined hereinafter, eud'illustreted in the accompanying drewings2 .in Which- Figure 1 is s. cross-section of our improved return-bell; Fig. 2, e top pien View of the bell; Fig. 3, e detail View of the clickingtongue, end Fig. 4 e View of a. modiiicet'ion.
ln the drawings similar reference characd ters indicate corresponding ports throughout the several views.
Our improved return-bell consists oi' e. cup? lshaped ortion s., inode of rubber or any other se ected materiel and having e number of holes a. therein.
B re resents e. cop mede of rigid materiel secureto the edge of the cup-*shaped portion A. in any suitable manner, such es cementin The oe'nter of cap B is raised, es shown et end is provided with e. central opening c.
D represents a tongue of spring metal secured neer the odg; of ce B end ire-ving its central portion kin ed or repressed, es shown at d, so that 'when its tree end is swung towerd the ce B and released a clicking sound is made. he free end of the tongue D is provided with e hole d', in which is secured an elastic strin E which passing through hole' c is adapte to be held by the operator.
In use the bell is thrown from the oberster, who holds the free end ofthe string E. When the bell reaches the limit or" the string E, its
momentum ceuses the tongue D to be drown toward the cap B, end when the elasticity of string E overcomes the momentum of the bell end. causes it to return to the operator the tongue returns to its normal Josition, ceusiug s. clicking sound, which ed s to the enjoyment' of operating the toy.
A lt is obvious that, ii desired, o. niece of, Wire F or other non-abrasive material may be secured to the tongue und passed through hole c to be secured to string E, as shown in Fig. 4, und 'we do not, therefore, wish to be confined to seourin the string E directly to the tongue nor to other details of constructionI except' Where limited thereto by the claims.
Hoving thus described our invention, what We claim isl. in combination with e. return-bell, e tongue of flexible materiel secured thereto,
seid tongue being buckled intermediate of its ends and e string secured to seid tongue, the tongue `when ilexed producing s noise, sub- 'stentielly es shown end described.
2. ln combination with e return-bell, o tongue ot spring motel secured to seid' 'bell and having its central portion kinked, and o. string secured to the free end of seid tongue, substantially es shown and described.
3. A return-bell comprising s. cup, n. ri id cap secured to seid cup, a tongue oi exi le materiel secured to the inside oi seid oep, seid toiwuc being buckled intermediate of its ends' and e string passed through scid hole Vund secured to the tongue of flexible meteriel, seid tongue when flexed producing e noise, substsntioll ss shown end described.
1i. A return-bal comprising u dhp, e rigid oep secured to seid cup, o. tongue oi spring instel secured to said ce and having its centrel portion kinked, en o. string secured to the free end of seid tongue, substantially es shown end described.
5.`A retunsbali comprisinrf o. cup, e rigid cap secured to seid cup and having e. hole therein, o. tongue of spring meto-l secured to seid cop inside oi' the bell und having its central portion lrinked, sind im elastic stringerecurod to the free end ofthe tongue end extended through the hole in the ccp, sulniten.m tinllyns shown und described.
In testiinon whereof we hereto alii): our signatures in t ie presence of two witnesses.
'ilflMAS Il. BURKE. THOMAS L. VALLEiY.
