Be it known that I, JosIAH NEWMAN YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hazlehurst, in the county of Gopiah and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and i useful Improvements in Cots; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in cots and canopies therefor, and particularly to that class of cots which are capable of being folded and taken apart for packing and Shipping.

The invention consists in a folding cot provided with standards at the sides, the said standards being so connected that the same maly be folded without removing the standarc s.

It also consists in a cot provided with a folding frame, canopy -standards pivotally connected therewith, and means carried by the standards for spreading and supporting a canopy or covering of any suitable kind.

The invention further consists in a cot provided with side bars having sockets arranged therein and crossed pivotally-connected legbars capable of engaging the sockets in the side bars and locks or latches carried by the side bars for securely fastening the folding legs to the cot when in use.

It also consists in certain other novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts. as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a cot constructed in accordance with the present invention and provided with canopy-supports at the sides. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the cot and canopystandards, the parts being shown in their folded position in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view showing one of the leg'- securing latches or locking mechanisms. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view showing the manner of securing the side bars to the upper end of one of the canopy-standards. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the upper ends of one of the standards in section, the section being also taken through the side canopy-bar. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view taken through the upper end of one of the cot-legs, showing its tenon extending into the tenon or recess of the cot side bar. Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail vView of the lower end of one of the cotlegs, the socket for receiving the canopystandard being shown partially in section. Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of one of the sockets for receiving the canopy-standard.

The present invention is designed for the production of a cot which is capable of being folded or knocked down and which is provided with means for supporting a canopy. or covering above the cot when it is extended for use.

In constructing a cot in accordance with my invention I provide suitable side bars l, to which are secured a piece of canvas 2 or other flexible material in the usual manner. The cot is supported at each end by folding legsections made up of cross-bars 3, which are pivotally connected at their central portions by a suitable pivot pin or bolt 1I. rIhe upper ends of each bar 3 are reduced in size, so as to form a tenon or projection 5, which is capable of insertion in a mortise or recess 6, formed in the side bar l opposite the end of said bar. The mortise 6 may be formed-entirely within the material of the side bar, if preferred, or one side may be closed by the bar or plate 7, as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 6 of the drawings. By this construction the side bar of the cot is not greatly weakened at this point, and the plate 7 strengthens the said bar.

In order to prevent the leg-bars 3 from dropping out of their sockets and becoming accidentally disengaged from the side bars of the cot, I provide pivoted latches or hooks 8. I preferably supply two of such hooks for each leg-bar, the said hooks being pivoted at their upper ends to the side bars l of the cot, while their lower ends have hooked portions capable of engaging a pin or lug 9, projecting from the leg bar 3. By pivoting the hook-bars 8 in proper relation to the leg-bar 3, one upon each side thereof, as shown in Fig.V 3, the hooks will not only serve to hold the legs in their sockets, but will brace them in each direction.

The cot is also provided with side standards or posts 10, the lower ends of which are pivotally secured to the feet of the cot. I have illustrated in the drawings a convenient and simple manner of securing the side posts or standards l0 to the ends of the cot-legs, consisting in socket-pieces 11, which are pivoted at their inner ends, as at l2, to the legs 3, while their outer ends are formed with recessed portions 13, capable of receiving the lower ends of the standards 10. passing pins 14 through the sockets and through the ends of the standards, as shown in Fig. 7. The standards or posts 10 are also secured to the side bars 1 of the cot with a loose connection, preferably a ring, as 15, which is secured, by means of a staple or other similar device, to the side bar 1, or preferably to the plate 7. rlhe rings 15 will prevent the side standards from falling outwardly and will hold them in a vertical position, the said rings also permitting of the folding of the cot and the sliding of the side bars with respect to the said posts 10 when such folding is being accomplished.

In order to properly stretch and hold in place a canopy, upper canopy side bars 17 are employed, which are removably secured to the upper ends of the post 10. As shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the upper ends of said posts are reduced to form supporting-shoulders 18 for the bars 17 and the reduced portions 19 of said posts extended into sockets or apertures 20, formed in the canopy side bars 17.

A simple `locking means is provided for holding the side bars upon the post 10 and may consist in each instance in a pivoted latch or arm 21, which is arranged to engage the upper laterally-projecting end of a pin or screw 22, which is set in the end of post 10.

When the cot is open or in its extended position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, acanopy 23,0f any suitable material, may be spread upon the side bars 17. Such a canopy may consist in mosquito-netting, when such is needed, or may be formed of rubber fabric, canvas, or material suitable for shedding water if the cot is to be used out of doors. Of course the material of the canopy can rest loosely upon the bars 17 and can be permitted to hang upon all sides of the cot for entirely inclosing the occupant thereof, and thus thoroughly protect him from all insects, mosquitos, or the weather, as the case may be.

By the construction above described the cot "is rendered capable of being folded so as to occupy a very small space, suitable for pack-l ing or shipment. The canopy is of course first removed, when the cot may be folded, the parts remaining in the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. If it is still further desired to knock down and fold the parts, the latch-hooks 8 are freed from the pins 9, when the leg-sections of the cot can be separated from the side bars thereof. The posts 10 fold closely against the leg-sections, and the said leg-sections and posts may be laid parallel with the side bars 1 of the cot, and the side canopybars 17, which have been removed from the posts 10, may also be laid parallel with the side bars of the cot, and the whole may then be rolled into a small bundle and tied or secured together in any suitable manner. When the cot is to be unpacked and opened or spread for use, the parts can be as easily placed in position again as they were previously removed.

The device is exceedingly simple in construction and not likely to get out of order and is valuable for use by hunters, fishermen, and hospitals and will be found desirable for army use.

Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

1. A folding cot and canopy made up of a body portion having pivoted supporting-legs at each end, the bars forming the legs having removable connection with the body portion, diagonally-arranged bracing means for holding the leg-sections to the cot, the said bracing means also preventing lateral movements of the leg-sections with respect to the body portion of the cot, and canopy-posts having a movable engagement with the cot and extending upwardly above the same at each corner thereof.

2. A folding canopy-cot comprising a cot proper, having folding leg-sections, socketpieces pivoted to the leg-sections, canopyposts resting in said socket-pieces and guiding means upon the cot proper engaging the said posts for holding them in proper position with respect to the cot and yet permitting of the folding of said cot.

3. A folding canopy-cot comprising side bars having mortises formed therein, leg-sections arranged near each end of the cot and provided with tenons adapted to t in said mortises, brace-plates carried by the side bars and forming walls of the mortises, bracinghooks pivoted to the ends of said plates and engaging studs upon the leg-sections, canopyposts pivotally connected with the foot of each leg-section and passing upwardly at the sides of the cot, rings secured to the said braceplates and inclosing the canopy-posts, and a canopy removably secured to the upper ends of the canopy-posts and extending over the surface of the cotf 4. A folding cot and canopy comprising upper and lower side bars arranged parallel, upper and lower fabrics connecting the side bars, crossed leg-sections near the ends of the said low er side bars, canopy-posts arranged at each corner of the structure and extending upwardly from the foot of the leg-sections to the upper side bars, means for removably securing the upper side bars to the ends of the posts, a pivoted member carried by the lower ends of the posts and pivotally secured to the lower ends of the leg-sections, and guide means loosely engaging the canopy-posts and carried by the lower side bars, the arrangement of the side bars being such that the cot may be folded, the upper and lower fabrics folding between the canopy-posts.

5. A canopy-cot comprising a cot proper, canopy-posts, side canopy-bars resting upon the said posts, the said bars being formed with apertures, reduced end portions formed upon the posts, and capable of engaging the IOO IIO

said apertures of the canopy side bars, detents vprojecting from the ends of the posts and overhanging the side bars and pivoted latches carried by the said bars and engaging the said detents.

6. A canopy-cot comprising a cot proper, folding leg-sections for supporting the same, canopy-posts at the sides of the cot, socketpieces for connecting the posts with the legsections, the said pieces having recesses or sockets formed at their outer ends, means for securing the posts in said sockets, and means for pivotally connecting the socket-pieces to the leg-sections.
