SCALP-IVIASSAGE BRUSH Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 14, 1905.
Application filed June 6, 1905. Serial No. 264,006-
]b u/l Iv/1 11m if, nrrg concern.-
Be it known that I, ROWLAND M. SMITH, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scalp-Massage Brushes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear. and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in toilet brushes designed for massaging or cleaning the scalp; and the invention consists in the matters herein set forth, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Among the objects of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this kind adapted for cleaning or massaging the scalp and which is capable of being made light and strong, and, further, to provide a brush having a handle formed to provide a closed receptacle for soap or other toilet preparation used in the scalp massaging or cleaning operation.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a brush made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the brush proper. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view thereof.
As shown in the drawings, A designates as a whole the handle of the brush, and B designates as a whole the brush proper. The brush itself comprises a thin web 7), made flat on one side and provided on the other side with a plurality of integral tapered teeth 6'. The web and teeth are made of a flexible material, such as rubber or a suitable rubber composition, thereby permitting the teeth to liex in all directions. Said tapered teeth are made of relatively large diameter at their bases to give stability thereto and taper at their outer ends to sharp points, so as to permit them to pass readily through the hair and reach the scalp during the massaging or cleaning operation.
The handle A is shown as made of box form and is provided with a removable cover, thereby constituting a receptacle to contain acake of soap or other cleaning or massaging preparation. The box-like handle A is made of sheet metal and comprises a side wall a, made of any suitable contour, a flat bottom wall a, and a removable cover or cap 0*. The upper flat side of the web 7) of the brush [its flat against the'bottom a of the box and is firmly attached thereto. whereby said bottom, which is made sufliciently rigid or stiff for the purpose, constitutes a backing for the brush.
The means for attaching the brush to the handle consists of a suitable gripping or confining flange on said handle which has interlocking engagement with the web of the brush at the margin thereof. As herein shown, the bottom wall of the box or hollow handle is provided with a marginal flange a, which is folded downwardly and inwardly to inclose and confine the thickened margin or rib 6 of the web of the brush, as shown in Figs. Qand 4. Preferably, also, the lower margin of the side wall of the box is similarly flanged, the flange (1" thereof being folded around the bottom wall flange a. The double flange construction described constitutes not only a means of firmly fastening the brush to the hollow handle, but also affords a connection of the bottom and side walls of the box-like handle and stitfens the latter at the comiecting-joint. The side wall of the box-like handle is preferably turned atan acute handle at a just above the bottom wall thereof, so as to firmly grasp or engage the bottom wall and its flange (1 and hold said parts rigidly together and also provides a joint between said walls.
In some instances it will be desirable to stiffen the web of the brush, so as to prevent lateral stress coming on the brush in the use thereof from causing said web to stretch and creep on the bottom of the handle. This may be accomplished by embedding a Hat metal plate 0 in the web at the time said web is formed or molded. The plate while performing the functions mentioned is protectedfrom corrosion by being covered with the waterproof material of the brush-web.
The box-like handle A may conveniently contain a cake of scalp-soap or the like used in the scalp cleaning or massaging operation, thereby providing a receptacle always at hand for such purpose. Moreover, the hollow metal handle of the form shown constitutes a light handleand one that maybe attached to the brush proper without the use of an adhesive substance, nails, or the like and constitutes also a handle that is capable of taking on a desir: able ornamental appearance.
I claim as my invention 1. A device for the purpose set forth, comprising a thin web made of flexible material and made flat on one side and provided at its other side with integral, tapered teeth, and a sheet-metal, hollow or box-like handle provided at its top with a removable cover and with a flat bottom against which latter the flat side of the web fits, the side wall of said hollow handle being continued below the bottom wall thereof and folded about the margins of the web to hold the same permanently fixed to the handle.
2. A device for the purpose set forth, comprising a thin web made of flexible material and made flat on one side and provided at its other side with integral, tapered teeth, and a sheet-metal, box-like handle comprising a flat bottom fitting the flat side of the web and provided with a marginal flange which is folded inwardly about the margin of the web to fasten said web thereto, and the side wall of the box-like handle being provided at its lower margin with a like flange folded inwardly under the flange of the bottom wall.
3. A device for the purpose set forth comprising a flat web composed of flexible material and made flat on one side and provided at its other side with integral teeth, a hollow, sheet-metal handle provided with a flat bottom wa'ill against which the flat side of said web fits, a flange integral with the side wall of said handle which extends below the bottom wall thereof and engages the margin of the web to fasten the same to the handle, and a flat stiffening-plate embedded in said web.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 2d day of June, A. D.
