UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIoE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 12, 1905.
Application filed March 30, 1905. Serial No. 252,924.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WILLIAM DREWKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clinton, in the parish of East Feliciana and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts and Securing Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to fence-posts and securing devices cooperating therewith; and it consists of certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, the preferred form whereof will be hereinafter clearly set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
The prime object of myinvention, among others, is to provide a fence-post and fastener for holding rails in cooperation therewithwhich will be reliably efiicient in character and of cheap construction, all of which will be set forth in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows my improved fence-post as applied to use. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective showing my post having rails secured in position thereon, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section through a portion of the post and showing in elevation the means for securing the rails thereto.
For convenience of description numerals will be employed, the same numeral applying to a similar part throughout the several views.
'The main object of my invention is to provide a very cheap though eificient form of post to which fence boards or rails may be readily secured, and, referring to the numerals on the drawings, 1 and 2 designate the two parts of my post, both of which are fashioned from a piece of suitable sheet metal, said piece of sheet metal being bent, whereby the parts 1 and 2 will occupy positions at right angles relative to each other, whereby great rigidity will be imparted to the post at the expense of a minimum amount of material. One of the members 1 and 2 or both of said parts may be provided with a plurality of apertures, as designated by the numeral 4, and it is obvious by reference to the drawings that rails or boards 6 and 7 may be permanently secured to the post at the expense of a very small amount of labor.
The ends of the boards 6 and 7 may be cut so as to partly overlap each other, as clearly shown, when a nail 10 of suitable size is entered through one of the apertures 4 from the inner side thereof and driven through a contiguous part of the end of the board 7, when the end of the nail may be bent downward and the point thereof directed inward into a contiguous part of the end of the board 6, when by driving the end of the nail into the board 6 the nail will be disposed substantially in the form of a staple, the head resting in the aperture 4, while the end thereof is disposed within the overlapping ends of the boards 6 and 7, thus insuring that said parts will be reliably held in their adjusted positions.
It is thus obvious that a fence of reliable character may be very cheaply built in the manner hereinbefore explained, and while I have described the preferred combination and construction of parts I desire to comprehend in this application all substantial equivalents and substitutes as may be considered as falling fairly within the scope of my invention.
It will be understood that the end of the post shall be properly sharpened, so that the finished post may be driven or otherwise entered in its position in the ground.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi 1. The combination with a post and apertures within the post; of fence-rails having overlapping ends contacting with the apertured portion of the post, and a fastener for securing said rails to the post, said fastener being formed in a single piece and having a head at one end and a sharpened hook at the other end, said headed portion being adapted to engage the post and one of the overlapping ends of the rails and the hook being adapted to engage the other overlapping end of the rails.
2. A fastener for fence-rails formed in a single piece and having a head at one end and a sharpened hook at the other end, said headed portion and the hook being adapted to re-,
spectively engage overlapping ends of rails. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE WILLIAM DREWKE Witnesses:
E. A. McCoY, J. M. NEsoM.
