Be it known that I, WILLIs P. FLownRs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vaginal Syringes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to syringes designed most especially for flushing the uterus or vagina, although it may be adapted to syringes for general use, the purpose being to avoid any injury to the walls of the canal or opening when the device is in service.

The invention consists of an expansible sack enveloping the nozzle of the syringe and filled by the fluid forced through the nozzle to the parts to be treated, said sack having longitudinal ribs upon its exterior and rows of outlets in its sides between said ribs.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings.

lVhile the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modilication, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a syringe embodying the invention, the dotted lines indicating the position of the sack when expanded. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the syringe on the line :11 w of Fig. 1, the dotted lines indicating the position assumed by the sack when expanded.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in both views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The syringe illustrated is of the bulbous type and of the pattern designed for flushing the uterus and vagina.

The nozzle of the syringe is indicated at 1 and is provided with a plurality of openings 2, constituting outlets. The bulb 3 for forcing the fluid through the nozzle may be replaced by any contrivance usually employed in connection with syringes for insuring a positive flow therethrough. The base of the nozzle is provided with an outer flange t, which is threaded to receive a ring 5, having an inner flange 6, which cooperates with the flange 4c to confine the expansible sack 7 to the nozzle.

The sack 7 may be of rubber, skin, or other material usually employed in therapeutical apparatus, rubber being preferred, as it conforms to the canal or opening without forming any wrinkles, which would be liable to cause irritation. The inner end of the sack 7 is provided with a rib or thickened portion 8, which is confined between the flanges and 6, so as to hold thepart 7 firmly in place. The sack 7 is slightly larger than the nozzle 1, so as not to close the openings 2 thereof. A series of pin-holes or minute outlets 9 are formed in the sack 7 and in the aggregate are of less capacity than the capacity of the openings 2.

Hence the fluid passes into the sacks faster than it escapestherefrom, with the result that the sack is extended, so as to conform to and fill the canal or opening in which it may be inserted. The openings 9 of the sack are preferably arranged out of register with the openings 2 of the nozzle, this arrangement having been found to give the best results. The openings 9 are preferably provided in straight lines which have a parallel relation, and between the rows of openings ribs or projections 10 are formed upon the outer side of the sack to hold the latter a slight distance from the walls of the canal, so as to permit of proper flushing or treatment of the parts when the device is in active operation. The ribs or projections 10 also serve to strengthen the sack longitudinally, thereby preventing its too great longitudiual extension without interfering with its circumferential expansion.

Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is 1. In a syringe, the combination of a nozzle having outlets, and an expansible sack enveloping the nozzle and having outlets and formed with longitudinal ribs stiffening and reinforcing the sack in the direction of its length and admitting of its diametrical expansion, substantially as set forth.

2. In asyringe, the combination of a nozzle having outlets, and an expansible sack enveloping the nozzle and formed upon its outer side with longitudinal reinforcingand spacing ribs and having rows of outlets in its sides between the said ribs, substantially as set forth.
