Description

No. 796,814. PATENTBD- AUG. a, 1905.
J. H. dooK. 'WAGON STANDARD.
APPLICATION FILED APB.. 3. 1905 JAMES H. COOK, OF WARRENSBURG, ILLINOIS.
WAGON-STANDARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 8, 1905.
Application filed April3,1905. Serial No. 253,473.
T0 (LZZ whom, it muy concern: y
Be it known that I, JAMES I-I. COOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Warrensburg, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Standards; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention'relates to improvements in extensible standards for wagons and the like; and it consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the ap'pended claim.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, durable, inexpensive, and efficient metallic standard of this character. which may be applied to wagons of any description and which may be quickly adjusted to correspond to the height of the sides of the body of a wagon.
The above and other objects, which will appear as the nature of my invention is better understood, are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved wagon-standard. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on the line 4 4 in Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 denotes my improved standards for wagons or other vehicles, which consist of a lower section 2 and an upper sliding section 3. These sections are made, preferably, from malleable ir'on, and the lower one is in the form of a hollow three-sided box to receive the upper one, which is Ieshaped in crosssection. The lower section l has its lower end formed with attaching- flanges 4, 5, and 6, which are adapted to engage the sides and top of the bolster or beam upon which the standard is secured. The opposing sides 7 of the lower section 2 are formed with depressed portions 8, which form grooves 9 and 1() to receive the flanges 11 on the edges of the I-shaped upper section 3. As clearly shown in the drawings, the upper section 3 slides within the lower section 2, the open inner side of the latter being closed by the flanges 1l on the inner side of the upper slidin section. The upper end of the section 3 is ormed with a large eye 12, through which a chain or the like may be passed for the purpose of securing a load upon the wagon-bed or body.
Any suitable means may be provided for securing the upper sliding section in an adjusted position within the stationary section but I preferably form the central portion of the section 3 with a longitudinal series of openings 14, which are adapted to register with alining openings 15, formed in the side portions 7 of the lower section 2, adjacent to its upper end. A split pin 16 or any other suitable device is adapted to be passed through the alining openings 15 and one of the openings 14, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawings.
The construction, operation, and advantages of -my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. It will be seen that these standards may be quickly and easily extended according to the height of the wagon, whether the side-boards are used or not, and they will therefore protect the wagon-bed when heavily loaded. They also tend to hold the load in a perpendicular position, and therefore throw the entire weight on the bolster of the wagon. It will also be understood that the device may be readily applied to wagons of any description and that it is of exceedingly simple and durable construction.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to the precise construction herein set forth, since various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`
A standard for wagons or the like, comprising a lower metallic section of substantially three-sided form in cross-section, the opposing sides of which being formed with depressed portions to provide longitudinal grooves, attaching-flanges at the bottom of said lower section, an extensible upper section of substantially I form in cross-section and provided with an eye at its upper end, said section being engaged with said grooves and slidable in said lower section, said lower section being formed with alining openings In testimony whereof I have hereunto set and said upper section with a longitudinal Iny hand in presence of two subscribing witseries of openings adapted to register with nesses.
said alining openings, and a pin or key passed JAMES H. COOK. through the alining openings in the lower Vitnesses: section and one of' said openings in the upper Gr. L. HOUSTON,
section, substantially as described. J. J. BINKLY.
