FORK-GUARD.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom, it may concern;

Be it known that I, ISAAC HIRsoH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fork-Guards, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in guards for carving-forks; and my obj ectis to provide certain improvements upon the construction of the spring-snapping means usually provided for holding the guard in its folded or unfolded position upon the fork.

In the drawings, Fi ure 1 is a plan View of a carving-fork provi ed with my improvement Fig. 2, a side view of the fork with its handle removed, showing the guard closed or folded and parts in section; and Fig. 3, a View similar to Fig. 2 with the guard in its opened or unfolded position.

The guard Ais pivotally mounted upon the shank B of the fork in a common manner. In the upper side of the shank is a preferably elongated shallow recess a. The guard is provided in its crotch with a deep socket 1), containing a spiral spring 0. A pin or plunger d, having a head (1, extends at its head portion in the socket 1) against the end of the spring 0 and at its opposite end bears in the recess a.

The recess a is in a position slightly in ad- Vance of a vertical line through the pin on which the guard is pivoted, and the pin or plunger (1, bearing against the spring 0, holds the latter under more or less tension at all times. In turning the guard from one position to the other the plunger is rocked upon its pivot in the recess a, compressing the spring as it moves toward the dead-center. When passin the dead-center in either direction, the p unger permits the sprin to expand and snap the guard into the folded or unfolded osition, as the case may be. The tension of the spring is sufficient to hold the guard in either adjusted position with desired stability.

My improved construction is simple and inexpensive to provide and particularly durable and desirable for its purpose.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a carving-fork, the combination of a guard pivoted to the shank of the fork and provided with a socket in its crotch portion, aspring in said socket and a rocking plungerpin bearing at one end against the said spring and at its opposite end pivotally engaging the said shank, for the purpose set forth.
