SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 788,335, dated. April 25, 1905.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK M. SHEPARD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Homestead, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment Attachments, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention has relation to garment attachments, and has for its object the provision of novel means in connection with a belt for supporting a pair of trousers and a nether garment.

This invention has forits further object to provide an attachment which may be easily and quickly attached to the trousers and upon the attachment is adapted to be supported a nether garment, and a beltis adapted to pass through said attachment to support the trousers upon the human being.

Briefly described, myimproved attachment is stamped from a piece of metal and bent to form a clasp to engage the Waistband of the trousers, and the piece of metal forming the attachment is sheared, the sheared portions being bent to form a strap through which a belt is adapted to pass and ahook upon which the nether garment is supported.

The above construction will be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims, and referring to the drawings accompanying this application like numerals of referenceindicate like parts through out the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a piece of metal which has been cut out of a sheet of metal and sheared. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my improved attachment. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of a pair of trousers, a belt, and a nether garment, showing my improved attachment in position thereon. Fig. 4 is afragmentary perspective view of a pair of trousers, showing my improved attachment secured thereon and a belt in position upon the same.

To put my invention into practice, 1 form my improved attachment for garments by stamping the same from a piece of sheet metal, the attachment as so stamped being illustrated I by the reference-numeral 12.

in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and consists of a strip of metal 1, having rounded ends 2 2, and the edges of the strip tapering inwardly to a central point 3.

The reference-numerals 4t tindicate projections which are formed in the process of stamping this strip upon the sides of the strip, preferably near the one end thereof, these projections having pointed ends 5 5. The strip of metal is sheared, as indicated at 6, to form a tongue 7, and is also sheared, as indicated at 8, to form another tongue 9.

Reference will now be had to Fig. 2 of the drawings, wherein I haveillustrated the strip of metal as bent to form my improved attachment, and in so forming the strip of metal I bend the same upon itself at the central point 3, providing a U-shaped attachment which is adapted to fit down over the waistband 10 of a pair of trousers 11. The projectionsatat are bent inwardly at right angles and are adapted to engage the material of the trousers, as designated The tongue 9 is bent outwardly, as indicated at 14, to form a hook over which the nether garment 15 is secured, this garment being generally provided with an opening 16 near its top edge, through which the book 14 passes. The tongue 7 of the strip of metal 1 is bent outwardly, as illustrated in Figs. 2, 3, and 4 of the drawings, to form a strap through which a belt 17 is adapted to pass, the lower end of the tongue being again bent outwardly, as indicated at 18, to form a projection by which the strap or tongue 7 may be raised or lowered to permit the insertion of the belt under the strap in case the same is not sprung outwardly sufliciently to permit the passage of the belt therethrough. In forming the tongue 7, as illustrated in Figs. 2, 3, and 4; of the drawings, it is bent to form a curved portion 19 near its attached end to the metallic strip, this curved portion performing the function of a spring and retaining the tongue or strap 7 in engagement with thebelt.

It will be observed from the accompanying drawings thatl have provided novel means for supporting a pair of trousers and the nether garment by a belt worn by the wearer of the trousers, and it will be noted that a plurality of projections similar to the projections 4 4 I to clasp the waistband of a garment and havmay be formed on the opposite end of the metallic strip 1, whereby a double means will be constructed to engage the material of the trousers and firmly hold the garment attachment thereon.

\Vhile I have herein shown the same as being applied to the waistband of a pair of trousers, I wish it to be understood that the same may be employed upon any garmentwhich is adapted to be supported froma belt and that other garments than the nether garments may be supported from said attachment, and it will be noted that a plurality of these attachments may be readily employed in connection with a pair of trousers. It will also be noted that 1 do not care to limit myself to the exact and specific construction shown in the accompanying drawings and described, but may alter the same to such an extent as will be permissible by the appended claims.

\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-- 1. An attachment of the character described, consisting of a single piece of metal of U shape and having on one side a downwardly-projecting spring-tongue, and on the other side an outwardly and upwardly projecting tongue. the last named side being formed with a plurality of inwardly-projecting lugs with upwardly-extending points.

2. An attachment for garments consisting of a single piece of metal of U shape adapted ing on its outerside an integral tongue with its free end extending downwardly, said tongue being adapted to embrace a belt, and having on its inner side a second integral tongue with its free end extending upwardly, said last-named tongue being adapted to engage a garment and support the same.

3. A garment attachment composed of asingle piece of metal having two integral tongues cut out of the body of the metal, said body being formed to approximately U shape, one of said tongues extending from near the bend of the body outwardly and downwardly ad jacent one side of the body in a compound curve and forming a spring-clasp adapted to receive a belt, the other of said tongues extending inwardly and upwardly adjacent the other side of the body and being adapted to engage a garment.

4:. An attachment for garments consisting of a clasp of approximately U shape and having on one side a tongue with its free end toward the end of the clasp and having on the other side a tongue with its free end toward the center of the clasp, said clasp having lugs on one side extending toward the other side.
