Be it known that I, W oer -GRUSHOFF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and lmproved Muff, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to wearing-apparel; and its object is to provide a new and improved muff in which the lining forms an integral part of the down-bed to permit the furrier to readily secure the fur or other cover in position and to hold the lining at all times properly stretched without danger of wrinkling up when placing the hands into the muff, as is so frequently the case with muffs ordinarily constructed.

This invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improve- 'ment, parts being in section; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.

The muffin its general construction consists of a down-bed A, an exterior cover B, of fur or other suitable material, and a lining O, of silk, satin, or like fabric. The down-bed Aconsists of a receptacle formed of an inner tubular sheet A and an outer tubular sheet A, the sheets being preferably ofacotton fabric fastened together at their ends by stitches D or other means, and the receptacle so formed is filled with a stuffing of loose material, such as eiderdown or the like.

The tubular lining G is superimposed on the inner sheet A previous to the completion of the down-bed A, and the ends of the lining C are secured to the ends of the sheets A and A at their juncture and by the same stitches D which unite the sheets with each other, so that the lining forms an integral part of the down-bed. A stiffening-strip E is also preferably placed in the juncture of the parts referred to and secured in place by the stitches D to give the desired stiffness to each end of the down-bed.

By the arrangement described the lining C snugly fits the innermost sheet A of the downbed A, and as it liesclose to the same it stiffens it, and at the same time the lining is held against longitudinal shifting relative to the down-bed and by being stiffened by the sheet A is not liable to wrinkle, and hence remains properly stretched at all times, thus presenting a smooth surface for the hands of the wearer of the mufi'.

1tv is understood that in the manufacture of muffs it is the practice to manufacture the down-bed independently of the covering, so

that the down-bed in itself forms an article of manufacture and in many cases is furnished to furriers for the latter to cover the same with the fur or other cover and at the same time to supply the lining. Thus the furrier heretofore, besides supplying the covering for the down-bed, was also compelled to place the lining into the opening of the down-bed and secure the same to the covering; but it is evident that in this mode of procedure the lining forms a separate distinct part of the downbed, liable to wrinkle and shift laterally independent of the down-bed. Now by having the. satin or silk lining firmly superimposed on the inner sheet of the down-bed and secured thereto at its ends the lining is held against lateral movement or wrinkling.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A muff comprising a down-bed formed of inner and outer tubular sheets having a filling therebetween, and provided with means at the ends for securing the two together, and a lining for the innermost sheet secured in place by said means.
