Description
0. BEN EDIOT. SUSPENDEB BUCKLE.
No. 7,726, Patented Oct. 22,1850.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHAS. BENEDICT, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT.
SUSPENDER-BUCKLE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 7,726, datedoctober 22, 1850.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES BENEDICT, of \Vaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Form or Plan of Buckles or Fasteners for Suspenders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
I first by means of suitable machinery cut out a plate of metal (A,) which may be of any desired form; having flanges or extensions (1, 2, 3 i A) of suitable size for the eyes or hinges and the hooks or guards hereafter described. I then bend a piece of wire (B) having the point of the bow (B, 5) somewhat out of the plane of the points or ends (B 6, 7). This is for the tongue of the buckle and the bow is bent out of the plane of the points for the purpose of acting as a spring to elevate the points by pressing upon the surface of the plate, but it need not be thus bent out of the plane until after the tongue has been attached to the plate. I also spread the points of the tongue somewhat farther apart than the distance between the hooks or guards (C 8, 9) which are to receive them in order that when the points are placed within the guards or hooks they may be retained there by the action of these springs. I then curve the flanges or extensions, (A 1, 2) in such a manner as to form hooks or guards (as seen in C, 8, 9,) sufiiciently large to receive the points. I then fasten the Wire tongue (B) upon the inside of the plate (C) by bending overit the two flanges or extensions (A 3, 4,) (as seen in C 10, 11). The points of the tongue can then be thrust through the suspender strap and being slightly pressed toward each other will be received and firmly held by the hooks or guards (see drawing marked C). I
hat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The connecting of the wire forming the tongue of the buckle to the outside plate by means of an eye or hinge formed by bending over a portion of the plate thus making the whole buckle of but two pieces of metal, (also bending or forming the wire which forms the tongue of the buckle in such a manner as to make a lateral spring for se curing itself in its proper place); and also the method 'of securing the points of the tongue by the lateral hooks or guards curved from the sides of the plate in such a manner as to receive and partially or entirely cover the points of the tongue, and the whole of these co-ntrivances arranged connected and combined substantially as herein described.
Waterbury July 27th 1850.
CHAS. BENEDICT.
