PATENT OFFICE.
SCOTT U. OUSTER, OF KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE.
DRAWERS-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 771,353, dated October 4, 1904. Application filed September 12, 1903. Serial No. 172,943. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SooTr (J. GUsTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Knoxville, in the county of Knox and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Drawers-Supporter, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an attachment for trousers for supporting the drawers.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and eflicient device adapted to be quickly applied to trousers and designed to form a permanent portion thereof and adapted to receive the loop of drawers, whereby the latter are positively connected with the trousers and are securely supported by the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this characterdesigned to be applied to trousers during the manufacture thereof and adapted to be secured to the same by the stitches which secure the buttons to the trousers.
Another object of the invention is to provide an attachment adapted to be used in connection with any character of button and capable also of being applied to trousers independently of the buttons.
It is also the object of the invention to provide a drawers-supporter which will be firmly fastened to the trousers and in which the lining or curtain will not be caused to roll up over the upper edge of the trousers.
Furthermore, it is the object of the invention to enable the device to be applied to trousers either by hand or machine and to permit the stiffening-canvas and the lining or curtain of the trousers to be stitched to the material or goods either simultaneously or independently.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a detail view of a drawers-supporter constructed in accordance with this invention and shown applied to a portion of a pair of trousers by the stitches for securing the adjacent button to the trousers. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, illustrating the manner of supporting the drawers. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the drawers-supporter. Fig. 4 is a detail view similar to Fig. 1, illustrating the manner of securing the device to a pair of trousers by a patent button. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the drawers-supporter shown in Figs. 4 and 5. Fig. 7 is a detail view of a portion of a pair of trousers provided with a drawerssupporter secured to the same independently of any buttons thereof. Fig. 8 is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 9 is a detail view of the drawers-supporter shown in Fig. 7, illustrating the construction of the inner or attaching side or portion.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawlngs.
l designates a drawers-supporter composed of an inner attaching side or portion 2, an outer engaging portion 3, and a bottom connecting portion 4, formed integral with the interiorly and eXteriorly arranged sides or portions and preferably curved, as shown, to render the device resilient and to enable the outer engaging portion to frictionally engage or clamp the loop 5 of a pair of drawers 6, as illustrated in Fig. 20f the drawings, whereby the said drawers are firmly supported and connected with the trousers at the waistband thereof. The upper edge or portion of the material or goods of which the trousers are constructed is folded downward and inward, as shown at 7, and the canvas 8 or other stiffening material is preferably folded, as shown, the curtain or lining 9 being preferably folded over the upper portion of the canvas or stiffening material, as clearly shown in Figs. 2, 5, and 8; but the trousers may be constructed in any other desired manner, as will be readily understood. The lining or curtain 9 and the stiffening material are provided with slits or apertures 10 and 11, the slit or aperture of the lining or curtain being preferably worked similarly to an ordinary buttonhole to present a neat appearance.
In the form shown in Figs. 1 to 3 of the accompanying drawings the inner attaching portion 2 is secured to the trousers by the stitches 12, which also secure the button 13 to the trousers, and any number of apertures or perforations 14: may be provided in the attaching portion or side for the reception of the stitches 12 and to accommodate the device to the apertures or eyes of the button employed. The outer engaging portion, which is preferably curved, as shown, to present a convex engaging-face, is provided with an opening 15 to afford access to the attaching portion and the adjacent portions of the trousers to enable the button and the device to be readily stitched to the same. l Vhen the fastening means for securing the button to the trousers is also employed for attaching the device, the inner or attaching portion preferably terminates short of the outer or engaging side or portion, as shown in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, and when the device is applied to the trousers independently of the buttons the interiorly-arranged attaching side or portion is preferably extended to the top of the trousers, as shown in Figs. 7 to 9, inclusive, to enable the device to be securely fastened in position and to prevent the lining or curtain from rolling up over the top of the goods or material of the trousers. When the device and the adjacent button are connected to the trousers by the same means, as shown in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, there is no liability of the lining or curtain rolling up over the edge of the goods or material.
In Figs. 4 to 6 of the drawings the device is constructed for use in connection with what is commonly known as a patent button, the button 16 being provided with a metallic shank 17, having a head 18. The button is applied to the trousers in the usual manner and may be of any desired construction, and as the specific construction of the button does not constitute a portion of the present invention a detail description thereof is unnecessary. The inner or attaching side or portion of the device shown in Figs. 4 to 6, inclusive, is provided with a circular opening 20 to receive the shank of the button 16, and the outer or engaging portion 21 is provided with an aperture to afford access to the button and to enable the parts to be readily applied to the trousers.
The device 22 (shown in Figs. 7 to 9, inclusivelis provided at its inner and outer sides with apertures, and its inner or attaching portion, which is of substantially the same length as the outer portion, is provided with a series of perforations 23, arranged at the up per and lower portions of the inner attaching side or portion; but these perforations may be arranged at any other desired point and may be of any desired number, as will be readily understood. In Fig. 8 an additional lining or piece 2 1 is employed, and the same is interposed between the lining or curtain and the canvas; but the additional piece may be arranged in any other desired manner and any number of layers or pieces may be provided.
It will be seen that the device is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, that it is strong and durable, and that it constitutes a permanent portion of the trousers. Furthermore, it will be clear that the device, which may be secured to the trousers by the stitches or other fastening means for securing the button thereto, is adapted to be applied to the trousers independently of the buttons. This will enable the buttons of the trousers to be arranged at the inner or outer sides of the same. Also the device may be used in connection with any character of but ton and may be applied to the trousers at any "time, either during the manufacture thereof or after the same have been completed. The doubled canvas or stifl'ening material adds greater strength to the trousers, and the particular arrangement of the inner attaching portion of the device and the attaching means prevents the inner lining or curtain from rolling up over the top of the trousers. The innor or attaching portion may be arranged adjacent to the inner face of the goods or material of the trousers, as shown in Figs. 2, 5, and 8, and extend into the space Within the loop or folded portion of the material; but it may be arranged between any other two portions of the trousers, as will be readily apparent, and may be attached to the same either by machine or hand.
Having thus fully described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a pair of trousers provided at its lining with an aperture, of a drawers-supporter consisting of a plate and comprising an inner attaching portion located wholly within the waistband or upper portion of the trousers and secured to the same, an upright engaging portion located at the inside of the trousers and arranged to receive and support the drawers, and a connecting bottom portion extending through the aperture of the trousers, and formed integral With the attaching and engaging portions, the said attaching and engaging portions being both provided with openings, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a pair of trousers having an exterior Suspender-button and provided at its lining with an aperture, of a drawers-supporter consisting of a plate and comprising an inner attaching portion located Within the Waistband or upper portion of the trousers, and provided With an aperture receiving the attaching means of the suspenderbutton and secured to the trousers by such attaching means, an upright engaging portion located at the inside of the trousers and arranged to receive and support the drawers, and a connecting bottom portion extending through the aperture of the trousers, substantially as described.
3. The combination With a pair of trousers having a Suspender-button, of a drawers-supporter consisting of an attaching portion provided with an aperture receiving the means for attaching the suspender button to the trousers and secured to the latter by the same, and an upright engaging portion connected at the bottom With the attaching portion, and
20 having an opening to afford access to the aperture of the attaching portion, substantially as described.
4c. The combination With a pair of trousers provided With a Suspender-button having a shank for securing it to the trousers, of a drawers supporter comprising an attaching portion having an aperture receiving the shank of a button and secured by the same to the trousers, and an upright drawers-engaging portion connected at the bottom With an attaching portion, and provided With an opening to afford access to the aperture of the attaching portion, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
