PATENT OFFICE.
TROUSERS-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 763,608, dated June 28, 1904.
Application filed November 30, 1903. Serial No. 183,304. (No mudel.)
To @ZZ whom it may concer-71,:
Beit known that I, ANDERS I-IoLMER, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers Stretchers, of which the following is a specification. i
One of the objects of this invention is the production of an improved device for stretching trousers.
A further object of the invention is the production of such a device which may also be used for suspending the trousers.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of this improved trousersstretcher. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the stretcher applied to a trousers-leg. Fig. 3 is also a side elevation, but showing the trousers suspended from a support and a weight connected with the stretcher for placing tension upon the garment. Fig. 4 is a section on dotted line 4 4, Fig. 3.
In the embodiment herein shown of this invention I provide a piece of wire l of spring material and of suitable length and gage and at its ends form the hand-loops Qin this instance oblong-to receive the fingers and thumb in the manipulation of the implement. The wire l is then doubled upon itself at its middle portion, forming the loop 3, and is again doubled intermediate said loop 3 and each of the hand-loops l in the curves 4, producing two presser-arms 5, the separating or opening tension of which arms is adapted to be substantially the same at all points in their length. rI his equal pressure is effected by bending the loop 3 and the curves 4 more or less open. For instance, if the pressure in the lower ends of the trousers-leg is not sufiicient it may be increased by bending open the curves 4, while pressure at the opposite ends of the presser-arms may be increased by opening the loop 3.
In practice the presser-arms 5 when inserted into the trousers-leg should be parallel and, as liereinbefore stated, should exert a uniform pressure throughout their length. As will be noted, the hand-loops 2 in the present embodiment are made oblong and are turned inward toward the longitudinal center line of the implement.'
A weight 6, of disk form, having a peripheral groove 7, is intended to be slipped into the loop 3 to stretch the leg of the trousers longitudinally when the garment is suspended. When said weight 6 is in position, the wire of the loop 3 lies within the peripheral groove 7 thus holding the weight rmly in place. The weight is inserted and removed through the open end ofthe loop 3. 8 refers to a horizontally-extending rod, upon which trousers may be hung, as by folding the garment over the rod, as shown in Fig. 3.
In use one of the stretchers herein illustrated is inserted into the lower end of each leg of a pair of trousers, the presser-arms 5 engaging the trousers-leg and stretching it out flatv and smooth. The loop 3 and a portion of each of the handholds 2 are permitted to project outwardly from the trousers-leg, and, if desirable, the garment may be suspended by means of said loop 3, the weight of said garment thus being employed to stretch the legs longitudinally and remove creases therefrom. If it is desirable to apply a greater weight for longitudinally stretching the trousers-legs, the
i upper portion of the garment may be supported in any convenient Waymas, for instance, in the manner illustrated in Fig. 3 with the trousers-legs depending from the support and one of the weights 6 slipped into the loop 3 of each of the stretchers before said stretchers are placed within said trousers-legs. The device is manipulated by grasping the handloops 2, the thumb and lingers being inserted in said loops. When the stretcher is placed within the trousers-legs, the implement is compressed, as shown in Fig. l.
It is clear that the embodiment herein shown is susceptible of various changes without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, wherefore I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein illustrated and described.
I claim as my invention- 1. A trousers-stretcher formed from a piece middle portion, bent upon itself intermediate said loop and eaoli of its ends, and bent inwardly to form band-loops by means of which hand-loops the stretcher is manipulated.
2. YIn a trousers-stretcher, in combination, a piece of spring-Wire bent in a single loop near its middle portion, bent upon itseltl intermediate said loop and each of its ends, and bent at its ends inwardly to form hand-loops by means of which loops the stretcher is ma- IO nipulated; and a Weight having a peripheral groove adapted to lie Within the loop first mentioned to stretch the garment to which the implement is applied.
