SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 7672.732, dated J une 14, 1904. Application filed December 24, 1903. Serial No. 186,498. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY WV. LUI-TMANN, a citizen ot' the United States, and a resident ot- Hays, in the county of Ellis and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Buckle, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a buckle adapted to clasp or clamp an attached strap, and thereby dispense with the usual tongue, whereby securing of the strap end is effected.
The invention consists of the new and irnproved buckle, which I will now proceed to describe, with reference to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and the reference characters marked thereon.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my invention in use. Fig. Qis a longitudinal sectional view through one side of the buckle, illustrating in full lines the parts in clamping action and in dotted line the same out ot' action. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View of the trough-like base portion. Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on line 4 4L of Fig.3, showingin dotted lines the strap-confining lugs at an adjusted position. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing special slots or openings in the base member whereby the reducinglugs are permitted sliding adjustment. Fig. 6 is a perspective view ot' the hinged clamping member, and Fig. 7 is a similar view showing in part the clamping-member-securing means.
In practicing my invention I employ a trough-shaped body portion A, having along its inner bottom a transverse rib B. This rib may be in the form of any suitable projection extending from side to side C C of the trough, as best shown in Fig. 3. It will be noticed that the ends of the trough sides C C are perforated, adapted toreceive bars E E, both of which may bein the' nature of a simple bolt or other means, as will be understood.
D denotes reducing-lugs at opposite sides of trough-shaped body, which are made adjustable transversely by set-screws E2, eX- tended up through elongated slots or openings F in the bottom of the body portion. (See Figs. 3, 4, and
The object of making the lugs D adjustable `is-to provide for confinedly holding straps of varying widths. G ,denotes the strap-clamping member or jaw, having at one end projections H H, transversely perforated at I, adapted to receive the bolt D, and upon which the clamping member has hinge action, as will be understood.- Cams H are formed on the under side of the projections H. (See Figs. 2 and 6.)
The free end of the clamping member G is provided with perforated extensions J J, adapted to receive a rod K, having projecting ends L. This end of the clamp has an under transverse rib Gr'.
M denotes a bail-shaped member having a series ot perforations N in its free ends O and also elongated slots P, as shown in Fig. 7. The two sides of the bail-shaped member are connected by a bar R, adjustably secured by fixed studs or bolts S in slots T.
YIt will be noticed that the trough sides C are recessed at U, adapted to receive the projecting ends L of the rod K. V denotes any suitable yielding hook or catch on the clamping mem ber G, adapted for engagement with the'bar R on the bail M.
In the use of my improved buckle one end of a strap X is secured thereto on the rod E, which may have an inclosing sleeve W, as shown in Fig. 2. To fasten the other strap end Y, the bail M is turned up, (sec Fig. 2,) which action lifts the clamping member Gr through its connecting means L P. Now obviously when the strap end Y is inserted in the buckle, as shown in Fig. 2, and the parts M G closed, as indicated by full lines in Figs. l and 2, the said strap Y will be securely held through clamping action of the cams H and ribs B G.
My improved buckle will be understood from the above description. It has advantages over all similar buckles in forming a bend in the strap over the rib B and by the double-clamping action eected on opposite sides of the bend through means of the cams H and the rib G. When a strap of reduced width is used, the lugs D should be adjusted to hold it centered in the buckle.
The bail M and jaw G are arranged and secured to the base or trough-shaped body,

adapted for use with an ordinary thickness of strap; but the perforations N in the bail ends provide 'for adjustment best adapted for effective clamping of a thin strap.
When the jaw G and the bail M are closed and the free end of the bail forced down to locked engagement with the catch V, the cam H and ribs B G will tightly grip the strap and hold it against slipping. The special object of the catch V is to hold the bail M and jaw Gr locked closed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination in a buckle, of a troughshaped body portion, a clamping-jaw, a bail hingedto the body portion and having slidable connection with said jaw, a rib at the free end of the jaw, a cam at the pivoted end of the jaw, and the rib on the body portion, said ribs and cam being adapted for gripping action, substantially as described.
2. rlhe combination in a buckle, of a troughshaped body portion, adjustable confining-lugs on the body portion, a clamping-jaw, a bail hinged to the said body portion, having slidable connection with said jaw, a rib on the body portion, and a cam and a rib on the jaw, said cam and ribs being adapted for gripping an inserted strap, substantially as described.
3. The combination in a buckle, of a troughshaped body portion, centering-lugs on the body portion, a clamping-jaw, a bail hinged to the said body portion, havingslidablc connection with the said jaw, ribs and a cam on the jaw, a rib on the body portionand a yielding catch adapted to hold the bail and jaw to closed position, substantially as described.
