Description
' UNITED "STATES Patented August 23, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
BRAUNFELS, TEXAS.
. CORN HUSKER ANHD CHOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 768,163, dated August 23, 1904.
Application filed April 18, 1904.
To all whom may concerm Be itknown thatI, JOSEPH W1LLMANN,Sr. ,a
I citizen of the United States, residing at New Braunfels, in the county of Oomal and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn Huskers and Choppers; and I do declare'the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in I corn huskers andchoppers.
The object of the invention is to providea device of this character whereby the butts of ears of corn may be severed from the ears and which will enable the husks to be more readily removed from the same.
' With this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully de-' scribed, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of thedevice, showing the. same mounted in position for use. Fig. 2 isa top plan view of the same; and Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the device, showing the side of the box on which the same is mounted in section.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes a chopping-block consisting of bracket-plate and the-outer arm 3 is pivoted a lever 6. The upper end of said lever has formed thereon a right-angularly-pro ecting head 7, to which is secured a segmental blade I 8. The lower end of said lever is bent in a Serial No. 203,679. (N0 model-l blade from being brought into engagement with the curved plate 2, thus preventing the blade from being dulled.
The plate2, arms 3, and bracket 5 are preferably formed integral or in one piece. The bracket 5 serves as a partial support for the 'pivote'dlever 6 and also as a brace for the curved plate 2.
In using the device the butt-ends of the ears of corn are placed upon the-curved choppingplate 1. The lever 6 is now actuated to bring the segmental blade down on said butts and to sever the same fromfsaid ears, after which the husks may be readily removed.
The device is secured upon the side of the box in such a manner that the weight of the handle end of said lever will overbalance the head and cutting-blade, thereby causing said head and blade to normally lie in a position above said cutting plate or block, thus enabling the butts of the ears to be readily inserted between said blade and plate.
From the foregoing description, taken in a connection withthe accompanying drawings, the constructlon and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion,
and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is
A corn husker and chopper consisting of a curved chopping block or plate, provided at oneside with a pair of downwardly-projecting arms, one of said arms being near the outer end of said curved block or plate and TEXAS, ASSIGNOR or ONE- I having a stop projecting from its outer side, I With the stop to limit the downward, cutting a lever pivotally mounted on the outer side stroke of the blade, substantially as described.
of said arm, having a head at its upper end In testimony whereof l have hereunto set disposed angularly With reference thereto and 5 extending over said block or plate, the lower nesses.
end of the lever being formed by a counter- J ,7 I l l balancing arm extending outwardly therei I Jobhl H ILLMABB from and serving to normally raise the head, W itnesses: and a cutting-blade attached to the latter, and A. C. JEssuN,
IO operated by the lever, the said lever coacting W. H. ADAMS.
