SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 758,151, dated.- April 26, 1904.
Application iiled January l2, 1904. Serial No. 188.701. (No model.) l
To a/Z whom t may concern/.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. SCOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sadler, in the county of Grayson and State of Texas, have inventeda new and usefulSuspender, of which the following is a specication.
The invention relates to improvements in Suspenders. i The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of Suspenders and to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient able Suspenders to be made of inelastic material and at the same time prevent them from tightening upon the back, shoulders, or breast of a person when stooping or sitting, thereby .relieving the trousers of strain and of all liability of havingthe buttonspulled od..
Another object of the invention is to provide Suspenders Yof this character which will relax when the wearer is stooping or sitting, whether they be made of elastic or inelastic material, and which will prevent trousers from drawing up when a person changes his position.
A further Aobject of the invention is to prevent Suspenders from sliding or slipping on the shoulders, and thereby wearing and tearing the clothing.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel Vcombination and arrangements of parts here inai'ter fully described, illustrated in the 'ac- .companyingdrawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spiritor sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
-In the drawings, Figure' l is a perspective view of a pair of Suspenders constructed in accordance with this invention and shown applied to a pair of trousers. Fig. 2 is a detail View illustrating the manner of connecting the adjustable supplemental rear straps or tabs with the main straps.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings.
ticity of the material of which the same are constructed. The straps l pass over the shoulders of the wearer and are crossed approximately at the center of the back, as indicated in Fig. l, .and are provided at the point of crossing with loops 2 and 3, which loosely connect the straps and 'prevent the same from separating when the Suspenders are detached. The loop 2 consists of a piece secured to one of the straps l at its ends and extending across and loosely receiving the other strap l. The loop 3 is secured to the latter, and it extends across the loop 2.
The front ends of the straps'l are provided with buckles 4 and have tabs 5, which extend to the front button 6, as indicated in Fig. 2. The front buttons 6 and 7 are arranged in pairs 'in the usual manner, the inner or central buttons 6 being located immediately infront of the body and the outer or hip button 7 being located in advance of the center of `the side portions-oli` the trousers. The front ends of the straps may also be provided with tabs 8 for connection with the hip-button 7 in the usual manner; but these tabs 8 may he omitted, if desired. Any form of buckle may beemployed, as will be readily understood, and the front ends of the straps l may be connected with the buttons 6 in any desired manner.
The rear' ends of the straps' l are provided with tabs or pieces 9, having eyes or buttonholes and engaging the outer front buttons 7. By this construction it has been found by experience that the Suspenders will not pull upon the trousers when the wearer is stooping4 or sitting and that when the wearer changes his position the Suspenders will not operate to tighten upon the back, shoulders, or breast. This will also prevent the trousers from being drawn up, and there will be no liability of tearing off the buttons of the same. Also the Suspenders will not slip on the shoulders and Wear or otherwise injure the clothing. Furthermore, as the Suspenders do not depend IOO upon any elasticity of the material for this operation they maybe constructed of inelastic material and are thereby rendered more durable and lasting.
The rear portions of the straps -1 are provided with depending loops 10, having buckles 11, which receive the upper portionsof -rear straps or tabs 12. These rear straps or tabs 12 are adjustably connected at their upper ends with the main straps 1 and are provided at their lower ends with eyes or buttonholes 13 4for the reception of the rear buttons 1li of the trousers. rlhe rear buttons 14C are arranged on opposite sides of the center of the back of the trousers in the usual manner. In theaccompanying drawings the loops 1() are shown provided with ordinary buckles; but it will be readily understood that any other form of buckle or any other means may be employed for adjustably connecting the rear straps or tabs with the main straps. These rear straps or tabs cross each other at the lower portion of the center of the back at a point between the back of the trousers and the loops 2 and 3.
It will be seen that the Suspenders are simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, that as they do not require elastic material they may be made more durable than heretofore, and that they do not necessitate any change in the arrangement of the buttons of trousers. Furthermore, it will be apparent that the Suspenders will not tighten upon the back, shoulders, or breast when the wearer changes his bility ofthe Suspenders pulling of the buttons or wearing the clothing by sliding or slipping thereon.
comfortable in hot weather,'as the looseness of. the parts will permit air to pass freely under the clothing. Furthermore, ers may. be advantageously employed as a skirt-supporter.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-l 1. Suspenders, comprising two main straps extending over the shoulders and crossed and slidably connected between their ends at the back, the front end s of the straps being provided with means for connecting them tothe front of a pair of trousers at the center thereof, and the rear ends being provided with means for connectingthem with the front of the trousers at the sides thereof, and means for connecting the intermediate portions of the straps with the back of the trousers, substantially as described.
2. Suspenders, comprising two main straps crossed at the back, and provided at their front position-and that there is no lia- Also the Suspenders will be found the suspendand rear ends with means for connecting l,them 6 0 with the front of a pair'of trousers, fand crossed supplemental rear straps or tabs L'connected with the main straps and provided with means for connecting them with the back of the trousers, substantiallyA as described.
` 3. Suspenders, comprising two main straps crossed at the back, and provided at their front and rear ends with means for connecting them with the front buttons of a pair of trousers,
and adjustable means crossed at the back of the Suspenders .for connectingv ther same with the back buttons of the trousers, substantially as described.
4. Suspenders, comprising two main straps crossed and slidably'connected at the back, the front ends of the main strap being provided with tabs arranged in'pairs for engaging the VAfront buttons of a pair of trousers, and the rear ends of the straps being provided with means for connecting them with the outer front buttons of trousers,`and supplemental rear straps or tabs for connecting the main vstraps with the rear buttons of the trousers,
substantially as described.
5.. Suspenders, comprising two main straps crossed and slidably connected at the back and providedl with means for connecting their front and rear ends with the front buttons of a pair of trousers, loops connected with -the rear portions of the main straps and provided with buckles, and supplemental back straps or tabs adjustably connected by the-buckles and provided with means for engaging the rear buttons of a pair vof trousers, substantially as described.
7. Suspenders, comprising two main straps crossed and slidably connected at the back and provided at their ends with means for connecting them with the front of a garment, and sup- TOO plemental attachingmeans for connecting the Y straps with the rear portion of a garment, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aiiiXed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
