Description
UNrrED STAT-Es CHARLES E. HOWELL AND Patented April 5, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 756,638, dated April 5, 1904.
' Application filed August 25, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES B. HOWELL and ADAM C. DE You, citizens of the United States, and residents of Campbell Hall, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cans, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to cans used fo the transportation and storage of milk and like fluids; and the object of the invention is to provide certain new and useful improvements in cans whereby the ears for the handles of the can are securely fastened in place to prevent the ears from becoming loose or detached and the handle lost.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the ears.
The milk-can shown in the drawings consists of the usual body A, to the upper end of which is soldered or otherw se fastened a breast or top B, having a mouth C. The ear I), in which the journal E of a handle E is journaled, is formed of a single piece of metal bent to provide a bearing D for the said journal E to turn in, and from the said bearing D extends in an upward direction an integral flange D soldered to the outer face of the breast B, and from the said bearing D extends in a downward direction an integral hook D adapted to hook onto the lower end of the breast B, so that the inner member 1) of the said hook D extends between the overlapplng lower end of the breast B and the upper end of the body A, as plainly shown in Fig. 2.
The hook D is preferably fastened to the breast B by the employment of solder, and
the inner member 1) is also soldered to the Seriallio- 170,721. (No model.)
body A, so that the ear D is very firmlyfas tened in lace on the can, and any strain in an upward irection on the ears at the time the can is carried about is mainly exerted against the lower edge of the top B and in an upward direction thereon, so that the ear is not liable to become loose or detached and the handle lost, as is so frequently the case with milkcans as heretofore constructed.
It is understood that each can is preferably provided with two handles and corresponding ears located diametrically opposite each other, and in order to accommodate the inner member D of the hook D between the body A and the breast B the said breast B is pressed outward to form a pocket or recess for the reception of the said member D, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 2.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A can having a body, a breast provided at its lower end with an outwardly-pressed portion forming a recess between the body and the said breast, a handle, and an ear for holding the handle, the ear having an integral flange at its upper end secured to the outer face of the breast, a bearing for the journal of the handle, and an inwardly-extending hook at the lower end of the ear hooking onto the lower end of the breast and extending into the recess between the breast and body of the can and engaging said breast and body, as set forth.
2. A can having a body, a breast provided at its lower end with an outwardly-pressed portion, to form a recess between the body and breast, a handle-ear having a hook member at its lower end engaging said recess between the body and breast, and secured to the body and breast, and a handle journaled in the car, as set forth.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES B. HOWELL. ADAM C. DE YOE.
