To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN HJODONN L, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Waterbury, county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stop Mech anism for Wire-Drawing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to stop mechanism for wire-drawing and other power-driven machines.
I will describe the construction in connection with a wire-drawing machine and then point out the novel features thereof in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top view of the power-driven end of a wiredrawing machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the stop mechanism. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of Fig. 2 and partly in section.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout.
Referring to Fig. 1, A represents the end portion of a wire-drawing machine, being that end of the machine at which the first reductions are performed. The rolls a and dieholders a are suitably supported and arranged on top of a framework a A trough a is also shown for containing a lubricating liquid in which the heads a revolve. The heads or rolls a are each mounted on a shaft a and the shafts a are suitably journaled on top of the framework 0 They are also each provided with a bevel-gear a, which gears mesh with bevel-gears a carried on the main power-shaft O. The main power-shaft O is suitably j ournaled in bearings 0, one only being shown, and a standard 0. The .shaft 0 is provided with a pulley 0, which is loose on the shaft, but which is operatively connected therewith by means of a suitable clutch. (Not shown.) The operative part of the clutch is moved by means of a collar 0 mounted upon and adapted to-slide upon the shaft 0, and toggle-arms c and the collar .0 is moved by the usual lever connections 0 rock-shaft d, and foot-treadle 0 The shaft 0 is also provided with a brake or stop mechanism, by
meansof whichthe shaft, and consequently the heads or rolls a, can be stopped at any time during the reduction of wire. The stop mechanism or brake is here shown as consisting of a pulley D and a shoe d. The shoe'd is carried by a rod or plunger d, which is reciprocated by means of a rock-lever d togglelevers d d, and a connecting-rod 01 which moves back and forth to operate the toggle-levers, and which in turn is moved by a crank d on the rock-shaft d carrying the foot-treadle 0 One end of toggle-lever d is pivotally connected to the outer end of rock-lever 01 and its other end is pivoted to the other member of the toggle-the lever 01 The outer end of toggle-lever d is pivoted at d to a stationary part of the framework. The connectingrod 01 is pivotally secured to the inner ends of both the members 61 d of the toggle, all three being thereby connected upon the same axis. The rock-lever 01 carries an adjustable part (2 which contacts with the end of the plunger 01. The purpose of this is that the stroke of the lever d in operating the plunger 01 may be shortened. The plunger 01 is supported in and moves vertically in a sleeve d carried by the standard 0, and adapted when released to move away from the pulley D by gravity. The rock-lever operates only to apply the shoe d. It will be understood that when the foot-treadle o is moved to throw in the clutch the brake is thrown off, and vice versa.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The combination with a power-shaft, of a driving-pulley and abrake-pulley carried thereby, a clutch applied to the driving-pulley for operatively connecting and disconnecting the same from the shaft, and a vertically-moving brake-shoe for engaging the brake-pulley and means for operating the said clutch and brake-shoe simultaneously, said means comprising a foot-lever, a rockshaft controlled thereby, a toggle for'raising the brake shoe into engagement with the brake-pulley, and connections from the rockshaft for operating the toggle, and a separate rock-shaft connected with the foot-actuated rock-shaft and provided with connections for moving the clutch into and out of engagement with the driving-pulley by the operation of the foot-lever and simultaneously with the release and application of the brake-shoe.
2. The combination with a power-shaft, of a driving-pulley and a brake-pulley carried thereby, a clutch applied to the driving-pulley for operatively connecting and disconmeeting the same from the shaft, and a gravity-released brake-shoe for engaging the brake-pulley, and means for operating the said clutch and brake-shoe simultaneously, said means comprising a foot-lever and a rock-shaft operated thereby, a toggle mechanism for raising the brake-shoe into engagement with the brake-pulley, connections from the rock-shaft for actuating the toggle and name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
