' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 730,057, dated June 2, 1903,
Application filed October 18, 1902. Serial No. 127,832. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CLARENCE W. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States,residing at Sioux City, in the county of Woodbury and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gas-Regulating Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in gas-regulating devices for burners, particularly burners of the Bunsen type.
The invention aims to provide a gas-regulating device for gas-burners having a permanent opening for the minimum flow of gas and further provided with means when operated adapted to regulate the supply of gas from minimum to maximum quantity.
The invention further aims to construct a gas-regulating device for gas-burners vhich shall be extremely simple in construction,
strong, durable, efficient in its operation, andcomparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With this end in view the invention consists of the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specifically described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming'a part of this specification, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which- 1 Figure l is a vertical central sectional view of the device. Fig. 2 is a detail of the coupling, and Fig. 3 is an inverted detail view of the regulating-thimble.
The regulating device is shown as applied to a Bunsen burner,'and, referring to the drawings by reference characters, 1 denotes the burner-tube, which isrotatable and has its lower end surrounding an annular sleeve 2, which is screw-threaded on its inner face at its lower end, as at 3, for connecting the sleeve to a gas-supply. The sleeve 2 is closed at the top thereof by means of a diaphragm 4, which may be integral with the sleeve or suitably connected thereto, and this diaphragm 4 is provided with a plurality of openings 5, 6, and 7.

provided with a gas-outlet passage 9 therethrough and at its lower end with an annu- The rivet 8 is secured approximately centrally to the diaphragm 4,'extending therethrough and projecting a suitable distance above the upper face of the diaphragm, and when in position the flange 10 of the rivet 8 engages the lower face of the diaphragm, The rivet 8 and diaphragm 4 are rigidly secured together.
The reference character 11 denotes'an inverted thimble adapted to normally engage the upper face of the diaphragm 4. The hollow rivet 8 extends'through the bottom 12 of the inverted thimble, and the flange 13 at the top of the hollow rivet is adapted to engage the upper face of the bottom 12. The rivet 8 connects the bottom 12 of the inverted thimloosely connected to the bottom 12 of the thimble. The thimble 11 is fixedly secured to and within the burner-tube 1, so that as the burner-tube'is rotated it will carry the thimble therewith. The bottom 12 of the thimble is provided with a series of differentsized apertures or openings 14 15 16, respectively, and so arranged in the bottom 12 in respect to the opening in the diaphragm 4 of the coupling-sleeve as to register one at a time with the openings in the coupling-sleeve. The opening or aperture 14 is the smallest of the three openings 14, 15, and 16. The opening 15 is somewhat elongated and twice or three times the size of the opening 14, and the opening 16 is also constructed in an elongated manner and approximatelythree times the size of the opening 15. The side of the thimble 11 is constructed with a plurality of vertical grooves 17, the bottom 12 of the thimble being so constructed or rounded off as to form an annular space which communicates with the vertical grooves or channels 17.
The construction of the hollow rivet 8, which connects thethimble and couplingsleeve together, is such thatthe passage of gas therethrough will never be interrupted. The flange 10 of the rivet 13 is larger than the flange 13 so as to increase the bearing surface thereof, and the size of the flange 13 ICO is such as to give the best results. The surface of the diaphragm 4 and bottom 12 of the thimble are perfectly smooth, constructed of any suitable material, and gas-tight.
The burner-tube 1 is provided with lateral air-inlets 18 and has also mounted thereon a sleeve 19, carrying an outwardly-extending hood 20. The thimble 11 is cut away, so recesses will be formed therein to register with the lateral inlets 18. The sleeve 15) is provided with openings 21, adapted to register with the inlets 18. The sleeve 19 is adjustable to cause the openings 21 to register toa greater or less extent with the inlets 18. The hood 20 is adapted when set to cause a predetermined amount of air to enter the burner and is also adapted to be used to rotate the burner-tube, and, furthermore, to act as a shield for the air-inlets.
The device is operated as follows, the construction of the same being such that the minimum flowof gas through the hollow rivet S will not be interrupted: If it be desired to increase the supply of gas, the tubeis rotated through the medium of the'hood 20, carrying the thimble therewith, so that an aperture or the apertures 16 in the bottom 12 of the thimble will be over an opening or the openings in the diaphragm 4, which form the top of the coupling-sleeve 2. If the supply of gas is to be decreased, the thimble is brought to its normal position that is, closing the openings in the diaphragm 4. The grooves or channels in the side of the thimble are adapted for the escape of gas, which, if it passes through the openings in the diaphragm 4, will have an outlet through the grooves or channels and be fed into the burner-tube. The lower end of the tube stops short of the end of the coupling-sleeve, and the weight of the lamp rests on the fastenings of the thimble. This will tend to keep the two surfaces-that is to say, the bottom 12 and diaphragm 4=together in addition to the resistance of the hollow rivet.
By the foregoing construction and arrangement it will be evident that I have devised a simple and inexpensive gas-regulating device for a Bunsen and other burners and one'in which the supply of gas from a minimum to a maximum quantity can be readily obtained, and it will furthermore be evident that changes, variations, and modifications can be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention orsaerificingany of its advantages, and I therefore do not wish to restrict myself to the details of construction hereinbet'ore described and as shown in the accompanying drawings, but reserve the right to make such changes, variations, and modifications as come properly within the scope of the protection prayed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A gas-regulating device comprising a burner-tube, an inverted thimble fixedly secured therein and provided with a plurality of openings of different sizes, a coupling-sleeve provided with a plurality of openings, and means forming a minimum supply-inlet and engaging with the thimble for rotatably connecting said thimble and tube to the coupling.
2. A gas-regulating device comprising a burner-tube, a regulating-thimble having different-sized openings, a coupling-sleeve provided with a series of gas-inlets, and a hollow rivet for rotatably connecting the burnertube and regulating means to thesleeve.
3. In a gas-regulating device, the combination with a burner-tube, of a thimble fixedly secured therein and provided with a plurality of openings and vertical grooves, a couplingsleeve provided in its top with a series of openings adapted to register with the openings in the thimble, and a hollow rivet for rotatably connecting the thimble and humortube to the said sleeve.
4. In a'gas-regulating device, the combination with a burner-tube, of a thimble fixedly secured therein, and provided with aplurality of openings of difi'erent sizes and Vertical grooves, a coupling-sleeve provided in its top with a series of openings adapted to register with the openings in the thimble, andahollow rivet for rotatably connecting the thimble and burner-tube to the said sleeve.
5. In a gas-regulating device, a burnertube, a coupling-sleeve in communication with a gas-supply, said coupling-sleeve provided with outlets for the gas, a thimble fixedly secured within the tube and adapted to regulate the flow of gas through the outlets of the coupling-s1eeve, said thimble provided with grooves for the escape of gas, and means forming a minimum supply-inlet carried by the couplingsleeve and engaging with the thimble for rotatably connecting said thimbio and burner-tube to the coupling-sleeve.
6. In a gas-regulating device, a burnertube, a coupling-sleeve in communication with a gas-supply, said coupling-sleeve provided with outlets for the gas, a thimble fixedly secured within the tube provided with openings of difierent sizes and adapted to regulate the flow of gas through the outlets of the coupling-sleeve, said thimble provided with grooves for the escape of gas, and means forming a minimum supply-inlet carried by the coupling-sleeve and engaging with the thimble for rotatably connecting said thimble and burner-tube to the coupling-sleeve.
7. A gas-regulating device comprising an inverted thimble having its bottom formed with a series of openings, a coupling-sleeve having a diaphragm connected to its top and provided with a series of openings, the bottom of the thimble adapted to rest upon the diaphragm of the coupling-sleeve, and means for rotatably connecting the thimble to the sleeve.
8. A gas-regulating device comprising an inverted thimble having its bottom formed with a series of openings, a coupling-sleeve IIO having a diaphragm connected to its top and provided with a series of openings, the'bottom of the thimble adapted to rest upon the diaphragm of the coupling-sleeve, and a hollow rivet for rotatably connecting the thimble to the sleeve.
9. A gas-regulating device comprising an inverted thimble having its bottom formed with a series of openingsand its side formed with a series of grooves, a coupling-sleeve havingits top closed by a diaphragm provided with a series of openings, the bottom of the thimble adapted to rest upon the diaphragm of the sleeve, and means for rotatably connecting the thimble to the sleeve.
10. A gas-regulating device comprising an inverted thimble having its bottom formed with a series of openings and its side formed with a series of grooves, 21 coupling-sleeve having its top closed bya diaphragm provided with a series of openings, the bottom of the thimble adapted to rest upon the diaphragm of the sleeve, and a hollow rivet for connecting the thimble to the sleeve.
11. A gas-regulating device comprising an inverted thimble having its bottom formed with a series of openings of difierent sizes, a coupling-sleeve having its top closed by a diaphragm provided with a series of openings, the bottom of the thimble adapted to rest upon the diaphragm of the sleeve, and means carried by the sleeve and engaging with the thimble for rotatably connecting it to the sleeve to permit of regulating a supply of gas through the openings in the diaphragm.
12. A gas-regulating device comprising an inverted thimble having its bottom formed With a series of openings of difierent sizes, a coupling-sleeve having its top closed by a diaphragm provided with a series of openings, the bottom of the thimble adapted to rest upon the diaphragm of the sleeve, and a hollow rivet for connecting the thimble to the sleeve.
13. A gas-regulatingdevice comprising a thimble formed with a series of openings of different sizes and a series of grooves, a coup: ling-sleeve having its top closed by a diaphragm provided with a series of openings, said thimble adapted to rest upon said diaphragm, and a hollow rivet for rotatably connecting the thimble to the diaphragm.
