Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY N. JASPER, OF AKRON, OHIO.
CHlMNEY-BLOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 722,712, dated March 17, 1903.
Application filed November 13, 1902. Serial No. 131,157. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, HENRY N. JASPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron,
in the county of Summit and State of Ohio,
have invented a certain new and useful Im provement in Chimney-Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in blocks for the construction of chimneys and 1o similar structures involving an internal uptake-flue.
The object of my invention is to construct or provide a block the shape of which shall be such that when placed upon a block of similar contour will form a space for the mortar between the outer walls of the chimney and the flue portion and which space shall be so constructed that the mortar will lie wholly within this space and not be exposed on the 2o outer face to the deteriorating iniuences of the atmosphere and will be protected on the inside from the gases which the iiue is to carry.
The customary mode of constructing chimneys of ordinary brick withboth vertical and horizontal joints has been found, after much experience, to be open to serious objections owing to the rapid decay of the mortar from the gases within the chimney and from the 3o weather on the outside frequently resulting 4o erecting a chimney and with less expense and less labor.
To the accomplisment of the aforesaid objects my invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described and then specifically claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication.
In the accompanying drawings, in which 5o similar reference-numerals indicate like parts in both figures, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved block, and Fig. 2 a section stone, concrete, earthenware, or some similar or suitable material made substantially square in its horizontal dimensions and a trifle over half as thick as the length of one of the said faces. Centrally in this block is a square opening passing entirely through the block and of a size which experience may determine to be the best for the particular use to which the individual blocks constructed under this invention are tobe used. On the upper and lower faces of this block the material is cut out, so as to make a concave groove entirely around the opening in the center of the block, and the concave portion extends laterally from the opening or iue to the outer edge of the block. This concavity may be of different depths for the particular use to which it shall be put. It will be noted that this concavity should extend to precisely the upper outside edge of the block and on the inside should extend to the edge of the line-opening. Both the upper and lower faces of the block are constructed identically alike. These blocks I prefer to construct by making them in a mold of any ofthe materials hereinbefore named. On the side of each block are long grooves 2 for the insertion of the workmans hands in handling them in constructing a chimney. In constructing a chimney of these blocks they are placed one upon another in a straight vertical line, and before placing the second block on the first the concave portion of the .top of the block first placed is more than lled with cement or mortar, as desired, and the next block placed exactly on top of the first block, and any surplus mortar exudes laterally to be readily scraped od by the tool Having thus described my invention, what IOO I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. A chimney-block provided with an opening, concave grooves on both faces between the openings and the outside edges of the block, and grooves on the sides of said blocks, substantially as shown and described.
2. An improved block for use in constructing chimneys consisting of a block of artiicial material with a comparatively large central orice running vertically therethrough, concave portions on the top and bottom faces extending from the central opening to the
