Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY W. MORROW, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE, ASSIGNOR TO PERFECT FUEL COMPANY, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
FUEL COMPOUND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 720,600, dated February 17, 1903. Application filed April 21, 1902- Serial No. 103,957. (No specimens.)
Toall whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY W. MORROW, a citizen of the United States, residing in Wilmington, Delaware, have invented certain Improvements in Fuel Compounds, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is'to utilize fine coal in the manufacture of a fuel compound in such manner that blocks or briquets made from such compound will not berapidly broken up during the process of combustion, but will burn slowly, disintegrate gradually, and give off heat with a reasonable degree of uniformity.
My compound consists of carbon in the form of small particles of coal or coke combined with earthy matter, with acidified saccharine matter, and also, preferably, with a suitable binding agent in addition to the latter.
I prefer to use carbon in the form of small particles of either anthracite coal, bituminous coal, or lignite, or a blend of them, or small particles of coke or other form of carbon or hydrocarbon as free as possible from sulfur.
The earthy matter employed may be any calcareous, argillaceous, silicious, ligneous, or other earthy matter, or a mixture of them, and the saccharine matter may be any cheap form of sugar or molasses, the acid being preferably pyroligneous acid, and the binding agent may be pitch, tar, or other material which will properly bind the coal and earthy matter, so as to prevent disintegration of the same in handling, and will impart to the blocks or briquets of the compound the desired water-repellent property. The acidified saccharine matter may in some cases serve the purpose of a binder. I may also add to the compound in some cases ligneous matter, such as sawdust or peat.
The proportion of earthy matter in respect to the carbonaceous matter in the compound may vary, in some cases being as low as fifteen to twenty-five per cent. and in others being as high as sixty per cent., by weight,
of the compound, the rule being that for burning with a forced draft a larger percentage of earthy matter should be used.
Where clay is employed lighter earth or loam should be mixed therewith in such quantity as to prevent the clay from baking into a hard block.
The amount of ligneous matter added to the composition may vary, preference being given for about five to ten per cent. of such matter.
The sugar or other saccharine matter may form five to ten per cent. of the compound, and it is treated with dilute acid in just sufiicient quantity and strength to obtain a thorough chemical change in the saccharine matter short of carbonization. This product is peculiar in itself, as it has the properties of causing the mass .made from earthy matter and coal to coke from the interior of the molded briquet made therefrom when burning and also to cause it to disintegrate gradually from the surface thereof, thus aiding the earth or loaui in obviating any tendency of the clay to harden the briquet, thereby preventing clinkering and causing the block to burn with the production of a fine ash.
The saccharine matter may be added to the compound before the acid treatment, as the acid has no effect upon the coal or earth in the compound and when added to the latter afiects only the sugar therein.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A fuel compound consisting of carbon particles, earthy matter, and acidified saccharine matter, substantially as specified.
2. A fuel compound consisting of carbon particles, earthy matter, acidified saccharine matter, and a binder, substantially as specified.
3. A fuel compound consisting of carbon particles, earthy matter, ligneous matter, and acidified saccharine matter, substantially as specified.
4. A fuel compound consisting of carbon particles, earthy matter, ligneous matter, fled saccharine matter, and a binder, sub- 10 acidified saccharine matter, and a binder, stantially as specified. substantially as specified. In testimony whereof I have signed my 5. A fuel compound consisting of carbon name to this specification in the presence of particles, clay mixed with lighter earth, and two subscribing witnesses.
acidified saccharine matter, substantially as HENRY W. MORROW. specified. Witnesses:
6. A fuel compound consisting of carbon WALTER OHIsM,
particles, clay mixed with lighter earth, acidi- J 0s. H. KLEIN.
