ATE r DEVICE FOR SHAVING CELERY.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 727,396, dated May 5, 1903.
Application filed September 19, 1902. Serial No. 123,983. (No model.)
To all whom. it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOSEPH F. LUHRMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamilton, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Shaving Celery, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a device for shaving celery. \Vhen celery is taken from the ground, it nearly always contains spots, which resemble rust-spots, which detract from its appearance and would render it unmarketable. The celery must therefore be cleaned and these rust-spots removed before it is in condition for retailing. At the present time these rust-spots are removed by cutting them out with an ordinary knife, which results in considerable waste as well as loss of time.
My invention therefore has for its object to provide a form of knife or shaver which enables these spots to be removed thoroughly and quicklyand with a minimum amount of waste.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a perspective view of my improved shaver; Fig. 2, a bottom plan View of same, and Fig. 3 a vertical section on the line 3 8 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A designates the body or handle portion of the device, which in the present instance is formed of cast metal; but this handle portion may be constructed of wood and altered in form or shape. The other end of the device is provided with a central slot 1), which extends longitudinally and forms two prongs c and d, one at each side of said slot. A vertical wall I) is formed at the inner end of said slot. The prong c is provided on its inner side with a beveled face a, and a screw threaded hole 0 extends through said prong c.
A cutter-blade e is secured on the beveled face 0' of the prong c, and said blade is provided with a slot 6, which extends in a direction crosswise thereof. The cutter-blade is also provided on its inner end with a straight edge e*, which abuts against the vertical wall I) of said slot. A screw f, passing loosely through the slot in said cutter and into the threaded hole 0 serves to retain the cutter in any vertically-adjusted position desired. By this construction the cutter may be projected more or loss through the slot 12 to make a greater or less out, as desired. It will also be seen that the cutter-blade e is longer than the slot 5, and its end e projects beyond the prongs c and d. This is important, as the projecting end of the cutter-blade may be inserted in the small crevices and cracks in the celery-stalk, which otherwise could notbe reached. It will also be seen that the straight edge e at the end of the cutter-blade e abuts against the vertical wall I) of the slot, and this construction prevents the blade from swiveling or turning about the screw f.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a handle provided with an open-end slot which forms two prongs; and a cutter-blade secured in said slot to one of said prongs and its cutting edge projecting at the bottom and its end projecting beyond the end of the prongs.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a body having a handle; two prongs and a slot at the opposite end from said handle; a vertical wall at the inner end of said slot adjoining the body; and a cutter-blade secured to one of said prongs and its cutting edge projecting through said slot, said blade having at its inner end a straight edge, 6 which abuts against said vertical wall and the opposite end of said blade projecting beyond the ends of said prongs.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH F. LUIIRMAN.
