PATENTED APR. 28, "1903.
UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM MAXWELL, or PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
M ETALLIC POLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 726,801 dated April 28, 1903. Application filed December 20, 1902. Serial No, 135,9'7'l- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MAXWELL, a
tegral with the casing, which may be produced at a single operation and thereafter shaped to form the pole and braces in certain relation.
Furthermore, the object of the invention is to produce a metallic pole having internal braces of variously-modified form, all of which are'within the scope of the invention, in that they are formed integral with the casings.
- A further object of the invention is to produce a metallic pole which by reason of the structural features will proveefficient and satisfactory in use, strong and durable, and
comparativelyinexpensive of manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts, to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to theaccompanying drawings, forming partof this specification,wherein-like characters denote corresponding parts inthe several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a metallic pole, broken away toshow the interior. Fig. 2 is a plan view with the top removed. Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 are similar views embodying modifications.
In the drawings, 7 indicates a shell or casing in which the braces 8 and 9 are formed integral, the said braces extending inwardly and parallel to the center, as at A, and then bent in diametrically opposite deviations to contact with the inner surface of the casing. The brace 8 has its edge contacting with the casing,"while the log forming the brace 9 is of euificient length, to be bent on itself and extend slightly past the center, then bent at right angles to the braces S and 9 and forming a brace 10, terminating in contact with the inner surface, approximately opposite the joint of the casing. Bands 11 are secured 011 the outer surface of the casing by shrinking or by frictional engagement, such bands being provided in connection with the modifications, as hereinafter described.
In the form shown in Fig. 3 the braces 12, 13, and 14 are bent to form a triangfilar frame which contacts with the inner surface of the casing at the points 15 and 16, the brace 13 havingits end bent at an angle at 17 to form a foot-like portion bearing on the brace 14,
In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the braces 18, 19, 20, and 21 are formed by bending the integral portion of the casing to form a square frame, the edge 22 and 23terminating in contact with the inner surface of the easing and with the angular portions of the braces also contacting with the innersurface.
This form will prove more rigid than that shown in Fig. 3, though for poles of comparatively large diameters the modification. in Fig. 3 WOllldo be preferable.
The form shown in Fig 5 is similar to that of Fig. 4, except that the braces 24,25, 26, and 27 are bent back on themselves and extend parallel a short distance, this .being provided for the purpose of increasing or diminishing the size of the frame formed by the braces,
the'same being adj ustable to fit interior diamminor axisa brace in that direction will. be
found unnecessary for-ordinary use. p,
Havingfully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- r V 1. In a metallic pole, a casing and braces integral therewith extending within the cas ing and bent to engage the inner surface of the casing. 2. In a metallic pole, a casing andbraces too mtegral therewith extending within the easing, said braces being bent to engage the easi'ng at varying points.
3. In a metallic pole an elliptical casing and 5 braces integral therewith extending within the casin g across the minor axis and engaging the inner surface of the casing.
In testiniony whereofI' aflix in the presence of two witnesse of, December, 1902.
Witnesses! JOHN NQLANDT J. PQQXPPLEMAN.
my signature, s,:this 19th day -WILLIAM MAXWEL
