To all whont it may concern:

Be it known that we,WILHELM BAUMEISTER a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and SAMUEL ADLER, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, both residing at Vienna, in the Province of Lower Austria, in the Empire of Austria-I-Iungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Holding Cigars and Cigarettes; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked there on, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to a device for holding cigars and cigarettes consisting of a ring adapted to be fitted onto a finger of the hand and a spike, arm, or holding-clamp, to which the cigar or cigarette is secured and which is hinge-jointed to the said ring.

According to this invention the connection of the ring to the spike, 850., is so arranged that the latter can be held by spring action either in the position in which it is in use or in the position in which it is out of use, or in an an intermediate position in which it stands at right angles to the plane of the ring. For this purpose the ring,which has spring action, has two projections which form part of the hinge-joint for the spike and that are formed with two grooves at right angles to each other, into one or other of which corresponding projections on the spike, the, can spring as it is turned into the different positions.

According to another modification the spike, 820., is provided with two spring-blades which in the different positions engage with different sides of a square block on the hinge-pin of the ring, so as to hold the spike in the two terminal positions, as well as in the middle position.

The cigar is held by impaling it upon the spike or arm. In the case of cigarette-holders the pivoted arm has at its free end two curved clamping cheeks, which are held opened out on hinges by springs for the in- (No model.)

troduction of the cigarette between them and are then caused by the same springs to press against the cigarette.

On the accompanying drawings are shown to an exaggerated scale various forms of cigar and cigarette holders constructed according to this invention.

Figure 1 shows a cigar-holder in the position for use. Fig. 2 shows a plan view of the same with the spike or arm turned at right angles. Figs. 3 and 4, as also 5 and 6, show two modifications of this construction. Fig. 7 is a side view, partly in section, and Fig. 8 a vertical section, of a cigarette-holder, the parts being in the position for use. Fig. 9 shows the clamping-cheeks in the opened position. Fig. 10 is a view of the cigarette-holder in the folded position.

The spring-ring a has at its two ends short projections b b, on the inner faces of which are formed two sets of grooves c c and c 0 the one set being in the direction of the plane of the ring and the other set at right angles thereto. A hingepin (1 passes through holes formed in the parts I) b at the points of intersection of the grooves, and upon this pin is mounted loose the spike or arm f, formed with a point e and capable of turning on the pin. The spike isshown at Figs. 1 and 2 in the form of a lance-head with sharpened edges g g, by means of which it can engage with the groovesc c or 0 c \Vhen the holder is required for use, the spikefis turned into the position shown at Fig. 1. The ring dis then put on one of the fingers, and a cigar is impaled on the spike. WVhen the holder is not in .use, the spike is turned through one hundred and eighty degrees, so as to lie inside the ring, so that the holder can then be placed in the pocket without fear of injury from the spike. When thus turning the spike f, its side edges first engage with the grooves 0 c and upon then exerting further pressure upon the spike it will turn, so as to engage with the grooves c 0 By thus dividing the motion the folding up of the holder will be facilitated.

Figs. 5 and 6 show a cigar-holder the ring a of which is formed of two parts, so that it can adjust itself by spring action to fit fingers of different thickness. The hinge-pin d, on the cylindrical ends of which the spike f turns with the part 2', has at its middle a square block against the sides of which bear two fiat springs j, fixed to the end of the spike, so as to hold this into whichever of the three before-mentioned positions it is turned.

The cigarette-holder shown at Figs. '7 to 10 differs from the cigar-holder at Figs. 5 and 6 in that the outer end of the arm fis provided with two curved clamping-cheeks 7c, which are held in position by means of springs Z, pressing the flat parts an thereof in recesses formed in the arm f. The springs serve both to hold the cheeks 7c in the opened position (shown at Fig. 9) for the reception of the cigarette and in the closed position pressing against the cigarette. Shown at Fig. 8.) On the hingepin d is also mounted loose a loop 0, by which the holder can be attached to a cord or chain.

We claim-- 1. A device for holding cigars or cigarettes, comprising afinger-ring, parallel projections, a holding device pivoted between the projections and means to hold said device parallel with and at right angles to the ring, substantially as described.

2. In a device for holding cigars or cigarettes, the combination with a spring-ring, of

thereon, a hingepin mounted in said projections and provided with a square middle portion, a holding device pivoted on said.hinge-pin and springs mounted on said holder adapted to engage the hinge-pin, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

3. In a device for holding cigars or cigarettes, the combination with a spring-ring, of parallel projections formed thereon, a hingepin mounted in said projections provided with cylindrical ends and a square middle portion, a holding device mounted on the cylindrical ends of the hinge-pin, springs secured to the sides of the holder adapted to engage the middle portion of the hinge pin and clamps mounted in the end of said holder, for the purpose specified.

4. In a device for holding cigars or cigarettes, the combination with a spring-ring, of parallel projections formed at the meeting ends thereof, a pin mounted in said projections provided with cylindrical ends and a square middle portion, a holding device mounted on the cylindrical ends of the pin, springs secured to the sides of the holder adapted to bear upon the middle portion of said pin, clamps pivotally mounted in one end of said holder and springs on the holder to engage said clamps, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

5. In a device for holding cigars or cigarettes, the combination with a finger-ring of a holding device hinged thereto, means to hold said device parallel and at right angles to the plane of said ring and two spring-held curved clamping-cheeks adapted to hold the cigar between them, substantially as described.
